how did you find out about this dummy medicare doctor? could you ask your primary care physician for recommendations? (or was this his/her recommendation?)

http://www.thyroidchange.org/patient-recommended-doctor-list-us.html

This is a list of doctors that thyroid patients across the county recommend for proper (non-traditional) thyroid treatment.  The Medicare Dr. is on this list as the only proper Endo in all of NJ.  This means that she orders ALL of the blood work related to thyroid function - not just TSH, which tests just the pituitary gland - and she treats the symptoms of the patient, not just what the numbers on the blood work show.  For most patients, they can show that they are "within normal range" on the bloodwork, but still experience many, if not all, of the symptoms.  My GP is telling me that even though I'm still outside or this normal range on the TSH test, I "shouldn't be feeling tired anymore" which is complete bullshit since I have almost every symptom still while she's bringing down my medication due to my nonexistent heart issue she claims I have.  Because of that, I won't consider any recommendation from her if she's satisfied with not only ignoring my symptoms, but claiming that being on the lower end of underactive is good enough.  Nope nope nope.

gotcha! that sucks. :[ the more i talk to people, the more i feel extremely lucky to have my primary care doctor. he always always always takes my opinion and every single symptom into account before diagnosing me or recommending a course of treatment. he's even called in prescriptions for me and other of my family members on the weekend without even seeing us.  my sister was on vacation in Georgia last year and got the stomach flu, which for most people isn't usually a huge problem, but every time she gets it, she gets severely dehydrated and needs to be put on medicine. this was on a Saturday, and her husband called the medical answering service, who put him through to our doctor, who called in a prescription to a pharmacy down there for her. so much better than having to go to the ER or an urgent care place.

we've known him forever, though, and he's a family friend, so i'm not sure if he would do that for anyone. when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it was going to be almost a month til she could get in to see the oncologist, he put in a call for her and she got an appointment after hours the next day. seriously the best guy.

i hope you can find a good reasonably priced doctor in your area soon! or just figure out how to barter with medicare only lady. take some family portraits for her.

He sounds awesome.  I wish I could find somebody like him.  Ideally I wish I could switch GPs and get someone who is open minded about this whole thing so that way I don't have to pay as much.

I wish I could barter haha.  People always talk about how Drs are willing to work with you if you can't afford to see them, but I've yet to come across one that will do that for me.

does it have to be an endocrinologist that you see? i know sometimes insurance is funny about referrals and specialist visits. most of those doctors on that list had other specialties it looked like. and could you go to a doctor out of state, like in philly, or lower NY?

we need to travel back in time to the days of doctors making house calls and getting paid with chickens.

I seriously want a new primary care doctor but I need someone that has Saturday hours due to my work schedule. So I'm pretty stuck with a dude that really doesn't give a rats ass. I mean, he's nice enough but the lack of personal connection after six years is troubling to me. I am due to get blood work done soon so this might be a last ditch attempt at making it work but I don't see it happening.

I'm thinking that it should be an endo.  I just don't want to chance it with seeing anyone who isn't a specialist at this point.  None of those Doctors listed for NJ take my insurance unfortunately, so if I were going to pay OOP for a Dr, I'd prefer it were an endo.

I could go out of state, but the issue still lies with missing work.  I'm hourly and I desperately need all of my 80 hours, especially if I have to pay a minimum of $50 for a specialist co-pay.

well. hmm. :[

missing a couple hours of work  + a $50 copay is still probably cheaper than, what was is, $340, and then $166 for each subsequent visit? i dunno. that's just a really unfortunate situation. i'm sorry :[

I am old.  I'm seriously about to get me one of those weekly pill boxes.

the other day my mom and dad both got some sort of pill box organizer in the mail as a free gift from somewhere. my mom was like 'you know you're getting old when companies start sending you complimentary pill organizers.'

I know this is annoying, haha. I'm sorry =\

But multiply that $50 copay and missed hours of work by the amount of doctors I'll have to bounce to until I find someone who will do the things that Medicare Dr. and others on those recommended doctors list do. =\  Plus each visit = new blood work.
