PO: The National "trouble will find me"

Recommended Posts

I got my copy of the deluxe edition today. After seeing the other posts in this thread I was a little worried about it being damaged. Then, one of the corners of the box was quite smashed. When I opened it, it had a small ding, but nothing you wouldn't see even in the store.

Hope everyone who has had a problem with getting a damaged copy can get it resolved.

Hey, you're from SLC! Did you go to their show at Twilight this year?

Yes!

I really didn't know a whole lot about them before Twilight, but decided to check them out. Absolutely amazing live.

It was a huge dilemma for me. I bought tickets for Americanarama right when they went on sale (before the Twilight Concert Series lineup was announced), but I knew it was on the same night as one of the Twilight shows. I bought tickets anyways hoping it would be an artist playing that night that I didn't care for. It ended up being The National, who out of the whole lineup I wanted to see the most.

I was going back and forth between the two choices. See the National/Sharon Van Etten for $5 or keep my $80 ticket to see Bob Dylan, Wilco and My Morning Jacket. In the end I went with Americanarama and loved it, but I still have lingering regrets for missing The National. I still haven't listened to Trouble Will Find Me because I don't want to bum myself out.

I had thought about going to the Americanarama show as well, but as I've never been a huge Wilco fan, I had seen several My Morning Jacket shows in the past, and I saw Bob Dylan a couple of years ago at the Saltair (aka the worst venue I've ever had the privilege of seeing a show at) and was pretty disappointed. The man is a legend, but he certainly doesn't seem to have legendary stage presence anymore. So, The National for $5 was a pretty easy call for me.

Holy crap -- The National tickets were only $5???

I just saw them at Outside Lands, and they were phenomenal (as usual). They're SUCH a great live band, with such great energy -- something that doesn't come across on their recorded material. They played with the Kronos Quartet as their string section, and then Bob Weir came out for Terrible Love. Such a dope set all around.

Yep. They were part of the Twilight Concert Series which is put on by the Salt Lake Arts Council every summer. The shows used to be free up until a few years ago when they started to get a lot more crowded. Now they just charge $5 a show or a season ticket to all 9 shows for $35, which is an incredible deal for the quality of bands they book every year. They've gotten some amazing bands in past years like Iron & Wine, Sonic Youth, Broken Social Scene, Bon Iver, The Black Keys, De La Soul, Modest Mouse, The New Pornographers, The Roots, Beirut, Explosions In The Sky, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, and a whole lot more.

I love my city for this.

Ditto. One of the best things about living in Salt Lake City. And, contrary to what many believe, there are actually lots of good things about living in Salt Lake City.

I was in the same boat. I would've loved to have seen them and Sharon Van Etten. But, Americanarama was pretty awesome too.

Anyone that needs to get this and The National's other great albums on wax should consider going to PopMarket today. $72 for Alligator, Boxer, High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me (the only four National albums you need):

Good deal. But black Friday is next week and last year there were all kinds of crazy deals. I'm gonna try and score these then.

It's funny that this thread was bumped. I have been listening to Trouble Will Find Me a lot this week and finally like it. I still don't think it's nearly as good as their other albums, but the worst of the National is far better than most of the other crap that is passed off as music.

arguing about which national record is best is completely pointless. everyone who likes the national likes them for different reasons. i hated boxer when i heard it, but trouble has converted me to a fan. starting to dig violet but haven't gotten into any of their other stuff yet. i can understand why people who like boxer aren't fans of the new record.
