i think after the letters are done, there should be a best live albums category and a best compilation/soundtrack category.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll add it to the OP.

I really don't care what the rules are for this. It's no big deal.

However, it does seem inconsistent to me that you could have a greatest hits album with a tracklisting that wouldn't count but you could have a live album with the exact same tracklisting which would. Yeah, a dude may throw in a cover or two on the live one that is only available there or mix a solo up a bit, but it is 90%+ the same song.

Your thread, your rules, though.

My rationale is that greatest hits albums have the exact same versions of the songs, but live albums have different versions.

Thrice's Vheissu actually had my vote - mentally - for the longest time.  I was all about Thrice in high-school, and when Vheissu dropped in 2006, it was the first album that really knocked me on my ass.  Granted, I was pretty musically naïve at that age, I sort of enjoyed how shocked I was by its unconventional direction.  It was a critical album to my musical tastes at that time -- it was the album that taught me that I should never expect a specific sound from any artist, regardless of how much I loved them.  It taught me that it's quite okay to not love a record immediately.  It showed me the value of repeated, uninterrupted plays.  And when it finally clicked, it really clicked.

But eight years later, I simply don't enjoy it enough to call it a favorite V album.  I skimmed my iTunes... and out of all the V albums I have, this is probably the one I'm most confident in calling a masterpiece.  Even if it just dropped last year.

TIM HECKER / VIRGINS

My second choice. Such a great record.
