Rule 2.00 from MLB rules: OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.

HE WAS IN THE ACT OF FIELDING THE BALL.

i don't know dude.  i watched a couple of times and that dude kicks his legs in the air to trip him up.  this is coming from a casual fan of baseball with no clue on any of the rules besides the obvious ones.

and like others have stated if that catcher just held on to the ball boston could be singing a different tune.

Just read an interview with torre and Joyce discussing the rule, and ridiculous fucking circumstances have fucked Boston right in its tender little pink hole once again.

Hey this is the stupid rule people decided was okay so we're going to enforce it in an extremely pivotal moment, k?

Fuck jim Joyce and fuck that piece of shit behind the plate whose name isn't worth remembering because he was the most inconsistent garbage man of all time.

You cannot say he was TRYING to trip him. He was focused entirely on that ball making its way into left field.

They can go ahead and ignore intention all they want, but it's the only thing they can do to save face on such an embarrassing ending.

I don't know mannnnnn....

Obstruction is purposeful. 3rd basemen, clearly dove to his right essentially leaving all that running room for the slide in to third. But it's all dramatic because the runner gets up from a slide, and since 3rd basemen already laid out for a catch, it looks sloppy. I think when both players are on the floor, obstruction needs to be negated.

Ry you gotta post the rest of it. Then it will make sense

OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.

Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered in the act of fielding a ball. It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the act of fielding the ball. For example: If an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.

Its also a judgement call at that point. Even if there is no intent. Done deal. They got it right.
