Last night I watched the new Oldboy. I didn't like it all that much, I thought Josh Brolin suited the character, but other than that I wasn't into it. I had a pretty negative expectation going into it though, so maybe that is a bit unfair, but there was no way it could top the original.

I also had no idea that the Olsen twins had other siblings.

American Hustle was crazy overrated, I didn't dig it at all.

Watched The Returned tonight, a bit cheese out zombie melodrama, it definitely had a lot of potential. I'd recommend watching it if you're into zombies and the idea of the virus becoming part of a functioning society. The acting was pretty great, considering it a non mainstream horror flick.

had a movie night

Don Jon:  Pretty enjoyable. think they did a good job with casting. definitely a "guy" movie.

2 Guns:  There was not enough story to hold an hour and 45 minute movie.  could have fit the plot into one episode of tv.  kind of boring. the banter between the two leads was enjoyable at times.

Cannibal the Musical:  Have not seen this in years.  has it laughs, like all the other trey parker and matt stone stuff alot better.  love seeing squeak from Baseketball in all their movies though.

I wrote this for somewhere else, so it's written for kind of a "stupid" audience of radio listeners, but here you go:

In a world of crass, pointless, and cynical reboots and nostalgia trip toy tie-ins, I was inclined to be skeptical about Lego Movie.

But was I ever wrong. Lego Movie is bright, sincere, and above all, hilarious - as good as any action comedy has been in recent memory.

They really made an effort to tell a story that could tug at anyone's heart strings, and laced it with enough layers that adults could find some things to laugh about along with their kids. It's silly and slapsticky in parts, with rapid fire visual gags and a pace that just doesn't quit.

If anything, the third act is a bit sappy, but it's hard to find much fault in that, as it IS a movie about kids' toys. They don't skimp on the tie-ins (there are an absurd number of "cameos" from DC Comics, Disney, and Lego's own properties), but they're done so cleverly, it's hard to find fault. I grew up with Lego sets in the 80s, and the character Benny (Charlie Day) is an amazing retro throwback - cracked space helmet, faded torso and all. Somewhere at my parents' house there is probably a toybox with a mini figure that looks EXACTLY the same.

A CGI film with a handmade, stop-motion feel, packed with charm and an incredible cast...Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Alison Brie, Will Arnett, Will Farrell, and possibly the most ridiculous Star Wars reference/cameo ever...this movie was definitely worth seeing in the theatre.

It's actually CGI and stop-motion, so the feel is genuine. Pretty cool and unique, just like the rest of the movie.

FYE was having another awesome sale where all NEW DVD's were 20% off.  Also they were having a buy 2 get the 3rd for $1 on their used stuff.  I bought:

Terminator (new)

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (used)

Timecrimes (used)

V For Vendetta (used)

Robocop (1987) (new)

Ghostbusters 1 & 2 (2-pack) (new)

I'm ashamed to say I've never sat down and watched all of any of those movies.  I've never seen Timecrimes or V For Vendetta at all, but I've only seen bits and pieces of all the other films.  Figured it was finally time to watch those classics.

I've been meaning to watch that for a few weeks now, it's 3 hour run time has kept me from it so far.

Yeah, I definitely had to pause it for a couple bathroom breaks throughout. It's hard for me to decide whether I'd recommend it... probably not. It's a well-made film (save for the unnecessary porn scenes) but the lack of conflict throughout the entire 3 hours is what killed it for me. I get that it's more of a character study, but that doesn't make it more interesting to watch.

I started it for the plot, I kept it on for the scissoring.

Been rewatching The X-Files.

Marathon viewing kind of hurts this show and it's 90s as fuck. Still good though. Almost into season 3 and if I remember my last rewatch (probably 8-9 years ago) season 3 is one of the strongest. Some episodes (pretty much anything with aliens/alien abduction) still manage to scare me. Not sure if it's because they're scary or I'm just remembering how scared they made me when I was a kid. It definitely has something to do with that time I watched Fire in the Sky when I was 8 and never slept again.

Has anybody here watched The Battery?  Like all the other flicks I've been watching while the lady is away, it's set in a zombie inhabited post-apocalyptic America.  This movie focuses on two men and the relation they build with one another as they struggle to survive.  There is very little emphasis placed on the zombies in the film, focusing on the internal struggles of the two protagonists.  I just finished this, and holy shit, definitely one of the biggest underdog films of 2013.  Also, the soundtrack is pretty amazing.  I strongly recommend everyone watch this movie.

I've been very slowly watching it, usually three or four episodes a week.  I agree that it is very 90s.  I'm not quite hooked on it, but I enjoy watching it slowly.  My attention wanders depending upon the episode.  I think my biggest issue with it is that every episode is so self contained, I like shows that have a stronger overall arc.  Still a fun watch though.

Yeah, that's probably the most 90s thing about it. TV shows couldn't really do big arcs because the only way to catch an episode you missed was in repeats or syndication. So the "big picture" episodes had to be spaced out between more stand alone episodes. With marathon viewing it's really jarring to go from like a two parter with a ton of crazy and important shit and then in the next episode Mulder and Scully go on some whacky adventure like nothing happened.

Especially with the way TV shows are now. Breaking Bad was basically like a really long movie. You cant just put on a random episode having never seen it before.

I've heard great things about this.  Waiting for the DVD release to finally check it out (whenever that is).

Cheap Thrills

Event Horizon

Cheap Thrills was fantastic.  Highly recommended if you like Funny Games or anything along the lines of that.  Event Horizon was really good also.  I've always heard how good it was and it lived up to the hype.  Recommended if you liked Sunshine.  It's too bad Paul Anderson had to go and start making those dumb Resident Evil movies...

Binge watched all 7 episodes of Broad City today. Holy shit this show is so fucking funny.

I haven't seen this week's episode yet, but I've really enjoyed all the previous ones.  One of the funniest new shows this year.

Also if no one has watched Review, Andy Daly's new show on Comedy Central, do it. It's fucking hilarious.

I'm excited to watch that, the trailer cracked me up.
