I've dreamed for a long time of Spotify and Last.fm merging, but with better social tools. Both are lacking.
Although Spotify absorbing Last.fm wouldn't solve everything, as I don't listen exclusively on Spotify. I play a lot of music in iTunes and iPhone, as well as vinyl. I use a script/extension called scRYMble that ties in to Rateyourmusic.com to scrobble things I play on vinyl after the fact or while listening. Nothing lost! Hahah

Still scrobbling religiously after 12+ years. Most annoying thing for me is how they basically killed the social aspect of it, making following people essentially useless. I miss the friend feed that showed me what others were listening to. Like Spotify's feed on the desktop version. I only scrobble for OCD reasons and because I enjoy looking at my own stats, but otherwise it's really pointless when the social tools and recommendation tools have been neutered. I also used to keep track of upcoming shows with last.fm, but that functionality was severely dumbed down years ago and never regained strength. That was a good way to connect with people locally too.

Not only that, but when Newbury started doing the retailer exclusive variants (around 2012/2013)  they and Urban Outfitters were pretty much the only game in town.

Now releases have Amoeba exclusives, FYE exclusives, European Dinked exclusives, Target exclusives, Bed Bath & Beyond exclusives, Jimmy's World of Tires: We Don't Just Match 'Em We Beat 'Em exclusives, Those Two Neighborhood Kids on the Corner Selling Lemonade and Colored Vinyl exclusives, etc, etc, etc...

In California at least, they tack on sales tax in addition to “meh” shipping rates, on top of already-bloated price tags.  What that equates to is $30-$37+ for a single LP, and even more for a double LP.  I could see people justifying those costs if the record was OOP or tough to come by, but a lot of folks will prefer to pay $21 PPD for a new, black copy that’s readily available on Amazon or Discogs than $48 PPD for a Newbury variant /500.  A lot of their variants turn out really nice, but when they average $35-$50 per release, it’s not terribly surprising that they stick around for so long.

I read the JFN Facebook post today and was pretty much embarrassed for them, glad Lou responded to it too.  There really was zero reason for it and the whole we want to be transparent thing is pretty dumb.  Bands hop from labels all the time and labels drop bands all the time no big deal.  Lou has put out a lot of stuff on that label in the years he’s been there, they should’ve just wished him well.

As someone who’s been involved in something similar to this situation, you keep your mouth shut and don’t make yourself look like an ass publicly. No one really cares enough for them to have to explain themselves (did/do people really care when bands change labels?) and try and garner sympathy. JNR have been doing this long enough to know this. That’s it.

Seems like LP5 In the Future Your Body Will Be the Furthest Thing From Your Mind is out today (at least digitally) - combining the 3 EPs from this year plus an additional 5 tracks. You can stream it on Spotify.

The artwork on these EPs has been quite terrible. Can't judge a book by its cover and all, but it's kept me from being that interested in them.

Streaming this today for the first time. Dang why's it gotta be so damn long? 78 minutes! I mean yes, b'lieve was 60 and Wakin was about 70 min, so I guess that's his MO and I'm not sure why it's a surprise, but it's a bit excessive to me. b'lieve felt too long because to me it didn't have as many strong tracks as Wakin. This one so far who knows, I've definitely been enjoying ti so far but I doubt it'll justify the length (to me). Hardly any albums can really justify being over an hour for me.

I caught this lyric from "One Trick Ponies" while walking to work this morning and it certainly rang true: "Cause I've always had a soft spot for repetition."

I think there is a world of difference between Lateralus and 10,000 Days. Like it sounds like the band Tool. They have their own sonic identity. That's ok. I don't want them to put out an album where they suddenly sound like Simon & Garfunkel or Nirvana or anyone else. I want them to sound like them. But the attitude and sonics in general between those albums is very different. To me its different between all the albums. People liked to say that Tool keep putting out the same 7 songs every 5 years (back when that used to be the approximate interval unlike it is today) but I think those people just didn't understand or have the tolerance or sensitivity for the consistency of the Tool sonic identity. They play the way they play and to most people it sounds monotonous from album to album but to me I can hear the very distinct separation between each album's own identity. I have a strong feeling this album will be different in that very same way. Maybe that's a subtlety that is too minute for a lot of people to detect but that's likely how its gong to be. I feel like 10,000 Days may be their weakest effort for me personally so I do hope they come back and kick my ass but who knows.

I'd rather they stick to their guns and feel comfortable in their artistry than to put out their own Villains or ....Like Clockwork.

Had been holding off on this, went ahead and picked up a 2008 Capitol Vaults copy for $17 on discogs instead. If you're in this for the music itself and not "OMG the colorzzzz" I'd suggest voting with your wallet, otherwise people will keep putting out subpar releases/mixes like this.
