This SDRE is so amazing it's depressing me. I'd have loved a whole album with this sound/lyrical tone. Why can't they keep their shit together?

That Dolly Parton 7" was a complete bust (no pun intended). I was expecting a Loretta Lynn-like revival, but it's pure pop country shit. Instant regret when the needle hit the record. At least it was inexpensive.

Can't decide on the best, but I absolutely LOVE that Spiritualized song on The Space Project. It's the best thing I heard yesterday. Best overall piece is probably the Songs:Ohia box set though.

Got in and out in 5 minutes. Got everything on my list except Built to Spill, which I was on the fence about anyway. Pretty good haul for me. I would post photos, but I suck at taking pictures.

Neko Case - Satellite of Love 7"
Dolly Parton - Blue Smoke 7" (no idea what this is like, but hoping it's like Loretta Lynn's TMR sound)
David Bowie - 1984 pic disc
    SDRE/Circa - split

    Soundgarden 10" singles box
    Dinosaur Jr Visitors 7" box
    Songs Ohia 7" box

    Oasis Supersonic 12"
Joy Division - An Ideal for Living 12"
    Scott Pilgrim soundtrack
    Spoon Love Ways reish
    Flaming Lips 7 Skies H3
    The Space Project 12"

Price on teh Songs Ohia box was ridic (I think it was like $70), but I'm sure it will be worth it. Spent close to $300 all told.

I don't understand the mob method. You'd think it would be easier for the staff to manage 8-10 folks at a time. It's also way better for the customers. I spent about 20 minutes in line last year and most people were pleased with the wait time.

"Purity and simplicity" are purely subjective terms. And less "electronics" in the signal path is not synonymous with better sound, although it is indeed true that no audio equipment is "truly transparent".  But what's troubling is the repeated insistence that it doesn't even matter if you can hear the difference. In my opinion, that's the only fucking thing that matters. Would you upgrade to a new ultra-super-HDTV that reproduces colors beyond what is visible to the human eye? Would you care if food had exotic ingredients that add no nutrition or flavor? Buy a car painted "obsidian" instead of boring ol' "black"? Do you buy Monster Cables? Then who gives a shit whether these albums happen to pass through a computer on their way to the pressing plant if it literally would be impossible for you to perceive the difference?
It reminds me of this, to be honest:

Discogs 100%.  9/10 whatever it is I have to add to the list is already there.  Occasionally the listing requires some clean up (so I do so).  When the item isn't there, I can easily create the listing (and do it right).  Using the want list has bagged me countless steals on items I wanted.  And it seamlessly transitions to a sales system that's better than eBay.

If I could export my list from Discogs to VC I totally would so that I could more easily facilitate trades and sales with VC members, but last I check this isn't possible.

I prefer Deadformat for sure. Pressing/variant info on Discogs is wildly inaccurate, it's unorganized as shit, and the whole thing looks and feels dated to me. DF is super easy to manage and you can list your records however you want, which is a big plus for me.
Just my two cents, anyway. If the VC collection function were similar to DF, I'd use it. Discogs is nice for buying and selling, but not so much for managing a collection.

I scored a copy of Danzig I on discogs a couple years back for $8 - yes $8 - cuz dude said the sleeve was water damaged and the vinyl "barely played through without skipping", but damned if I could find any evidence of water damage and after I cleaned the record it sounded mint. sometimes you get lucky.

I spoke with the owner of my local store last year while waiting in line and he says he pays his rent for the next 8 months with the sales he makes on RSD alone. That's enough to make me want to keep it going... these guys need all the help to stay open they can get.

Releases like this are totally the beginning of the end for the "vinyl renaissance." It may not be right around the corner, but when you start seeing things like this - releases that are limited for the sake of being limited, hand numbered, over-priced and basically released to market as pre-packaged collector's items - you know things are hitting a saturation point.

It happens all the time - look at baseball cards, comic books, beanie babies, whatever. You have a group of core diehards that create a market out of nothing due to their sheer love of a product and then the floodgates open and everything goes downhill from there.

Don't get me wrong, there will always be a market for records and those that love and collect them. But remember we're not talking about first pressing of Velvet Underground albums or rare mono releases of the Beatles. These are readily available cash grabs and in one or five or ten years, who's really going to care enough to spend a premium on the 2014 edition of Nirvana's first album on some random color that was released by some random retail store? It's just going to be one of the dozens of colored vinyl releases of Bleach and no one will give it anymore attention than any of the others.

It really makes me sad when I see teenagers drooling over these types of releases (usually while proudly exclaiming how they just got their first turntable from Brookstone or Third Man or wherever...) when I know they can get a quality used black vinyl version at one of the truly indie record shops around here for $10 (or heck, even on eBay!).

IN FACT, at these prices, they can get a quality used colored vinyl version of this from the 90s which at least has a little more cachet than this, right?!

I think you're overlooking an important fact right in your own post: your relative was a huge Elvis Costello fan. There has always been a market - for nearly as long as records have been around - catering to huge fans. There's got to be someone buying all those Beatles picture discs, die-cut Madonna interview singles, shady Smiths bootlegs, endless color variants from Europe, etc. I'll even admit there's a few bands who I have difficulty passing up re-releases by.

The difference here is that these aren't aimed at huge fans. Maybe some huge fans will buy it, but if every huge Nirvana fan - the ones who own Love Buzz and such - picked this up, it would have sold out in 10 seconds. This is aimed at the casual vinyl listener who thinks albums pressed on color are A) pretty and worth a 300% markup. I reckon a good amount of these will never even be opened from their shrink-wrap.

Remember, according to Newbury Comics themselves, these aren't even records! They're individually numbered "pieces", like those Franklin Mint chess sets or limited Marvel superhero busts. Hurry, supplies are limited! Collect 'em all!

it's really easy to do this and not worth getting intimidated over. I've literally eyeballed every single install I've done for overhang and tracking and then measured with a protractor and not had to make any additional adjustments.
