yeah i saw that, no thanks haha.  I was curious about the MOTA ones but not for $100 when they say you might get audio defects.

My black side D of this ADOM release is scratched to fuuuuuuuuuuck.  Like, one of the worst I've ever seen.  Thanks to those loose plastic pieces...

    Still sounds pretty good otherwise!

yeah i mean i really want to hear what else they've got but it wasn't what I was looking for when I think PSOTY.

In other news....  Skarntyde repress with new cover art!!!!   One of the best post-rock albums ever and should be in everyone's collection.

Yeah i'm liking this a lot too.  It feels more same-y to other bands, but it's very well done and I'm liking it.  I wasn't in love with the sound of the jangly guitars on the first one, but this is good stuff.  Ender is a sick song though.

Digging the hell out of that lineup.  Not at all “Dunk-core” haha.  Really pumped about O’Brother & Spotlights.  And Shy, Low.  Plus I just listened to the new Driving Slow Motion (mentioned several times here) & that new album is killer.  And duh, Holy Fawn!

I can see what you mean, because I LOVED Lights and Motion at first - that dude can write some truly moving stuff.  However, they are as annoyingly one-dimensional as I think I've ever come across.  It's literally all the same, and for whatever reason his medium or approach gets annoying to me.  I love the first couple releases, I think they're great.  But fuck dude, please write ONE dark song.  Just one.  JUST ONE.

I'm not sure I agree with that being Pillars' approach....  I think they're just trying to write engaging, heavy post-rock that crushes on stage and they've done just that.  You don't always have to reinvent the wheel.  I'll give them props tho because this album is vastly more unique than the previous one, which has many, many sections where it's like "Okay this is the Gone in Bloom and Bough part", "here's the Not My Blood part", "here's the Some are White Light part" etc etc.  I still love it, but that album has a lot of very very similar parts to other songs.

I know the allure too though because I did that with my death metal band - i copied riff stylings and song structures from Morbid Angel all the time.
As long as I keep you hooked on Elusive releases.... XD XD XD XD

Well said Gumbo.  And I do applaud the efforts being made to “popularize” post-rock in general in the US.  Hell, even if POST. fest is another “Dunk-core” fest, my brother & I are most likely going.  We’ve had the “live vs studio” discussion a million times so no need to rehash but I agree with your points.

Sign me up for seeing Pillars at Post Fest (assuming they’ll be there), but I just don’t have interest in this on vinyl. If they ever cut a live album, I’d most likely snatch that up.  I know they closed with one of the new songs when I saw them with Seeress (if I had to guess it was Escape) so I know how much better it translates live.

You aren't wrong with the Caspian worship.  But I still love it.  If you're going to copy a band, it might as well be Caspian.

I'll tell you though, these songs fucking CRUSHED live.  Like, CRUSHED.  Seeing them on the main stage with the lights was a trip and a half.  I call them "Bomb" post-rock, because they do these like, big explode-y detonations in the peak sections.  Like just slamming on the open strings, dropping bombs haha.  It was very fun live.
Yeah i mean, we like what we like and there's no problem with that.  We have to remember though that this is a business.  Yeah, Dunk! is out to create community and all that good hippie love stuff, but at the end of the day.... they need to sell.  They need to make money to keep things going.  And judging from the rabid response that the merch tent gets at the festival, this shit sells.  A lot.

I mean, they've been able to open up their own pressing plant.  Between Dunk! and A1KA, they've sold almost half of this first pressing, and Pillars is a small-ass band in the scheme of things right now.

Look at Ranges.  I love CJ and I love Ranges, but the music isn't breaking any new ground - it's just very well done post-rock, and they've managed to make it to a 3rd pressing that is now almost sold out as well.  Their next album is looking to be a banger though, I'm very excited about it.

But we can sit here and critique from our office chairs and our beds, but at the end of the day, this product (what Derek calls "dunk-core") moves units and generates interest.  We'd all love for EVERY single release to be ground-breaking and fresh and super unique, but we're all human - we copy and steal and re-purpose and that's okay.  I know that I don't fall in love with every release, and that's okay.  I'll buy what I like, and leave what I don't.

This Pillars album isn't my favorite either, but the dudes are kind as hell, genuine, and passionate.  For their efforts and approach, they deserve to succeed.  Especially with the success of Post. Festival - that's Nason from Pillars' brainchild, along with another buddy.  The American Post-rock scene is taking off in large part due to the relationships between the A1KA, Post. Festival and Dunk! and think that's an absolutely beautiful thing.

We talked about this on the New Musical Horizons radio interview we did at Dunk!.  It was CJ, myself, David from Young Epoch and some other writer friends - we were asked if post-rock is dead and CJ was like "Fucking nope, I sell enough to make a living off of this, so no way" (in so many words haha).

You guys also forget or don't really get to see that the scene is SO, SO different in Europe.  They just support bands more over there, they go to smaller shows more often.  It's just different.  In America, we don't really give a shit about the arts or small bands - we really don't collectively make an effort to go see dive shows with 9 people.  In Europe, that's the norm.  I mean, I went to see Toundra before Dunk! last year in a mid-sized city in Belgium (Ghent) and there had to have been 500 people there.  It was fucking wild.  Ranges pulled about 100 people at their Hard Rock Paris gig last year, where here they'd get maybe 20 outside of their hometown.  So, it's just a different place.

To echo something I said earlier about Pillars being fun live, I think that's another element that is being forgotten - this stuff is very engaging in a live setting.  For instance, I couldn't stand Wang Wen on record but their set at Dunk was enthralling.  I fucking loved it.  So, there's 2 realms to be considered I guess.  I go to A LOT of shows, so I tend to listen to a record and think "Oh yeah, this would crush live" even if it's a bit tepid on record.  This has happened to me a number of times, and it's gone both ways where I think some bands are better in the studio than on record - like Rosetta.  I love Rosetta, but they've never quite really gotten me at a show to where their studio stuff gets me.  Caspian is sometimes the same way, it depends.  Other bands absolutely slaughter their studio stuff with the live show.  So, it really depends.  I would put Ranges in that category, because I feel like their songs just take on a bigger life on stage.

Anyway, buy Cavum!   XD XD XD

This was my feeling when they re-pressed "Mosquito Control" last year or whenever - I bought it on Ebay like 3 years ago for $15.  People were asking upwards of $50 for those represses.  Markets are weird!

They'll get to it eventually, I'm sure - once those records hit the 20 year mark we'll see another round of remasters I'm sure.  I still ***VASTLY*** prefer the original mix of Oceanic, but I'm down with the remaster of Panopticon.  The remaster for Oceanic sounds far too clean and separated; it takes away some of that old school feeling for me.
You need to check out the new Outlander album - 5 songs, maybe 30 mins total.  It fucking CRUSHES.

Album of the year so far for me, I think.

Monograf came up on my gf's Youtube playlist like last week, I was enjoying it.  Gotta go back and listen again.  As far as Glasgow Coma Scale, a lot of my Dunk-associated friends CREAMED themselves over it.  I remember liking it, but not enough to buy it.  Will have to revisit!

New Outlander has been UTTERLY and UTTERLY crushing me.  If you guys haven't fucking listened to this, I'm going to reach through your computer and smack you.  Tracks 2 and 3 especially.   If you like "Tunnel Blanket" or the band A Film In Color, this stuff is right up your alley.  Hypnotic, chill... feels like you took one too many Klonopin.  I cannot praise this material enough.

fucking RIGHT?  One of my favorites as a kid... so mysterious.  It's basically 2 movies in one: a suspense thriller and then a feel-good comedy.  Early Sarah Jessica Parker too!

But yeah, "Radiogaze" makes me feel like I'm cruising through the clouds of a clear blue sky in a flying saucer at Mach 3 hahaha.  I love it.

Also I checked out that Be Water stuff this morning, that was really really good!  Too bad they have no physical media, I would have bought the shit out of that album.  Owen with the YATC vibe was pretty spot-on.

I will say that I listened to Radiogaze for about a year and hated it.  Didn't get it.  I hated their sound, it was too dense and not what I was looking for in that style.

And then one day something just kind of clicked.  IMO the back half of the album is the best.  I would urge you to at least listen to When > We > Not Enough.  "We" is my favorite song, no question.  It makes me feel like I'm in Flight of the Navigator, surfing through the clouds with Max in the spaceship.

Re: Pillars, that new track is fire.  Their old album was pretty straightforward post-rock, by the books.  It wasn't bad, but it stole a lot from other bands IMO and I'm really stoked to see them next month at Dunk.

Yeah I feel you on this, 100%.  Once you get to "Falling Stars" it's fucking go time.  I still need more time with "More" (pun i guess?  haha) but I've liked what I've heard so far.

Who is PSUB?  I just googled it and all I got was Purdue Student Union Board XD

Did you guys check the new Harborlights song yet?  This band is a fucking unknown force...  sleepily coming out of Boston and just crushing.  They just signed to Deathwish, and should be poised to blow up.  They have so many songs I love.  Their stuff is about 50/50 with vocals vs. instrumental, and the vocals take some getting used to I think.  Their album "Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree" and "Aphelion" gets TONS of play from me.  Their drummer is very noteworthy, and you can hear his chops in the new track.

There is far too much to quote & respond too haha.  I’ll do my best to address a bit of everything.

Re:  pg.lost.  Despite not caring for them much, there isn’t a post-rock/metal band I wouldn’t go see if they came my way.  I don’t doubt for a second that they would slay live.

Re: Live vs Recorded.  I agree with both Owen & Gumbo.  I do put a lot of stock into a band’s live performance, but also appreciate a great album.  TEOTO is definitely front & center in my point of “Great live band, lackluster studio band”.  I won’t buy “-aire” on vinyl because it’s just not an album I’m going to go out of my way to listen to much.  But I won’t miss them live.

Re:  Godspeed.  I actually had the exact opposite experience as Gumbo.  I had always liked them (albeit casually) & thought seeing them live would really put them over the top.  But they were probably the most disappointing band I’ve seen in a long time.  They really did nothing for me live.

Re:  Au Revoir.  Definitely agree with Gumbo.  I like their album; don’t love it.  I mix it in on shuffle but haven’t spun my vinyl in a while.  But they were probably top 3 live @ Dunk.

    —-

Good live performances can really put studio recordings in a new light for me.  There are plenty of albums across all genres that I like or am “meh” on that take on a new life after hearing some of it live.  But the opposite happens, too (again TEOTO).  There’s this other band I heard live & it was really the first time I had listened to them (The Record Company...not post-rock lol).  They played one of the best live sets I had ever seen.  Incredible energy & sounded perfect.  Bought their new album, & it’s straight flaccid trash.  Lacks everything I loved about the live performance.

So there really is no right answer.  It’s all about personal perspectives & experiences.

The Holy Roar signing still doesn't make any sense to me.  That label must have offered them a ton of money, or they must be old friends, but they shot themselves in the foot with shitty shipping practices.  Would have been nice to have a clean-playing first press copy of the record, but I'll take a Triple Crown repress any fucking day.

Also that would bum me out if they didn't do Yawning, that and Arrows are the best damn songs!  hahaha.  Great news about East Coast dates though!

I suppose I can't fault them to some extent.... wasn't that a huge issue with ITTCT records from Science of Silence?  Specifically "Red Forest".  Maybe someone else can clue me in about that but I seem to recall some big stink over that record and the fact that they shipped them in the printed inners with no padding and so they all got ripped to shreds.

Personally, I could give a shit about printed inners.  All I want is a gatefold, poly-lined sleeves, and a well-pressed quiet record.
