Shoegaze/Dream Pop Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure Ride own the rights to their music. They've been reissuing their albums on their own since 2001.

Very true, I was just trying to make any connection I could I guess haha.

Speaking of, anyone who owns the Nowhere 25th Anniversary Blue Marble, how does it sound? Thinking of getting it since its one of my favorites

Our oldest gave me a late Christmas present (he has college friend really into everything shoegaze - old and new) - a solo project from a guy in Nova Scotia called "We Need Secrets". Forgive me if already mentioned in the thread but the search here didn't show anything...

And suggested an older group, on hiatus, called Mira - especially the album "Apart" - A search also produced no results so hopefully these are 'new' to some folks like they were to me.

Many of the songs are on YouTube, but he said not on Spotify, Grooveshark, etc.  I liked what I heard so I picked up a CD for <$5 shipped.

Enjoy! :)

I came here to post about Mira, glad to see they were already mentioned.  "Apart" is phenomenal.  In fact, I think I like their version of "When You Sleep" better than the original!

The daephne album I really enjoyed, as well as the SULK track. This thread is costing me much more than the Postrock/metal thread!

For any interested in the Saint Marie pledge - even if just picking up the albums later and not pledging - I bugged them abit about wanting to hear the three albums (they DM'ed me on Twitter and asked 'why do you need to hear them first? I'll upload them in a couple of days') :)

Made my day lol. Because I wasn't immersed in the shoegaze scene when it was happening, so 99% of these bands are new to me, shoegaze noob, and I grew up in the 70's wasting money buying albums based one song on the radio, and then the rest of the album was swill.

The pledge: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/shoegazereissuespart3?utm_source=mail_out5722&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=artist23691

February (whole thing) - I'll let you be the judge on whether this is dreamy or -gazy, save a track or two, but it's all about if you like the music: https://soundcloud.com/saintmarie-records/sets/february-tomorrow-is-today-1

Orange (whole thing): https://soundcloud.com/saintmarie-records/sets/orange-the-complete-recordings-1

The Emerald Down (couple of tracks, others can be found on youtube or whatever magic places y'all go to): https://soundcloud.com/saintmarie-records/sets/the-emerald-down-scream-the-sound

Come payday I may be down for Orange and Emerald Down TP; I'm sucked in the TP vortex and can't get out, sometimes they're my only/listening copies.

I also put a plug in for Secret Shine's EP - the OG 10" is selling for way too crazy moon money, and needs a repress. The Bilinda Butcher's EP should move very fast.

I just signed up to post in this thread. I've lurking on this thread for over a year. I love shoegazing, and I got to see the whole UK (MBV/Ride/Slowdive etc) movement rise and fall back when I was in college. I'm happy to see the whole present day revival.

This is a weird batch to release for a Shoegaze Archive release. First, to me these are still more resent (I'd call 1989-93 the original Shoegaze years). These are much later. Also, Wyatt's idea of shoegaze is much different than (noise, wall of guitars, fuzz, psychedelic, pop song sensibilities). Calling February shoegaze is kinda of pushing it for me (They're from my city and I've had to sit through them open for other bands). I do like The Emerald Down but I'd call them Dream-pop and they're also later. Even the very short lived Captured Tracks stuck to the 89-93 time period.

But still, bless Wyatt for the Secret Shine reissue.

The past releases at least hit from the golden era (89-93) and there's still so much to reissue from that time. For example, the incredible The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa - Susurrate that came out in '93 and is listed on discogs for $400 (I even think the CD goes for $$)

Welcome! and thanks for your insights. I agree 100% on your SM comments on these releases.

Susurrate I'd love to see repressed, LOVE IT!! I did end up buying a CD for about $20 with a group of other CDs like Stella Luna: Stargazer and Astrobrite: 8 Candy. Got lucky on EOST 10" Fluidtrance Centauri from someone on DF for cheap.

That's a great score. Good music is good music no matter what format this on. Loving this genre also means a lots of great albums from the late 90's to early 2000's are going to be CD only releases. Thankfully a few of the gems are getting the vinyl reissue. I can't believe how excited I am for the Skywave reissue.

Claire records (which is still going and helped with the Airiel Winks & Kisses reissue) put originally Susurrate out in the US. Maybe we should be asking them? Who'd rather see a Susurrate & Starrgazer reissue?

re: Skywave, do you have a link to the re-issue information?  A few months back I was reading an article about Scott Cortez (those loveliescrushing should be getting signed and shipped out real soon!!) which referenced a ton of links, one of which was Skywave. They evidently were active just a couple hours up the road from me in Virginia, and a guy from South America had arranged for a bunch of groups to do covers of their stuff (APTBS, Static Daydream, etc):  https://theblogthatcelebratesitself.bandcamp.com/album/va-got-that-feeling-a-tribute-to-skywave  which I immediately donated and downloaded.

re: Claire doing those re-issues, I will shoot them an email this week! Maybe if enough  people bug them...

Also, I bought an unplayed copy of Secret Shine's "After Years" CD in the group listed about, and I think it was $15-20 but well worth it.

Kanine Records is putting this out for RSD.

Also Kanine put out a great record from the band Young Prisms, In Between. It's a couple of years old but a great 'gaze record folks may have missed out on here and is still available too. They kind of have a Slowdive vibe to them. I love this song.

Thank you re: Skywave and the Young Prisms track is perfection...
