omik11303
I personally really like where this topic is headed. Looks really professional, just the way it should be. I think there should be a graphic next to some of the really good less-known bands that aren't as likely to be "starred" by those just entering into the genre (e.g. Watered, Cecilia::Eyes) so that people still check them out and don't just breeze over them. That being said, here is my personal top 20 list of post-rock bands, loosely ranked. 1. The Evpatoria Report (listen to: Golevka) 2. Daturah (listen to: Reverie) 3. Sunlight Ascending (listen to All the Memories, All at Once) 4. Godspeed You! Black Emperor (listen to Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada) 5. The Severely Departed (listen to The Severely Departed) 6. Yndi Halda (listen to Enjoy Eternal Bliss) 7. The Seven Mile Journey (listen to Notes for the Synthesis) 8. Audrey Fall (listen to Mitau) 9. pg.lost (listen to It's Not Me, It's You!) 10. Giants (listen to They, the Undeserving) 11. Toundra (listen to (II)) 12. Hammock (listen to Oblivion Hymns) 13. If These Trees Could Talk (listen to Above the Earth, Below the Sky) 14. Lost In Kiev (listen to Motions) 15. Saxon Shore (listen to The Exquisite Death of...) 16. Maybeshewill (listen to I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone) 17. The End of the Ocean (listen to Pacific.Atlantic) 18. Talons (listen to New Topographics) 19. Jakob (listen to Cale:Drew) 20. Inventions (listen to Inventions) drds89 and batman

Youinreverse
Can I rate my top 20 members of VC? A good portion of them are in here. This thread is great. abovetheearth
mrewest
Do you guys think we should do the star ratings for bands with 3 or more albums? And then maybe do an up and coming rating as well? So Caspian would get the star rating, and then Audrey Fall would get an up and comer rating. drds89
abovetheearth
well..my top list criteria is that they must have at least 2 full length LP's. im not just gonna throw a band out there for having 3 good tracks on one album. i like your thought. Maybe more votes for up and comers as well so they don't get lost among all the post rock giants.
GHOSTDRONES
well done boys. this is amazing. id like it be be strictly instrumental. no ambient..etc. my list to come shortly. I love this whole idea but I don't understand. Most ambient is instrumental as is drone and noise. Do you mean that you only want instrumental post rock? abovetheearth
i guess ambient is just 180 degrees from my definition of post rock. so yes, i guess instrumental post rock would be my wording. because then we'll lose focus and the list will then be 1,000's long. drds89
Appreciate all the brainstorming and work ahead of time/ upfront to make this a pinworthy thread and helpful resource. Props to King and Derek for the work and creativity thus far! One of the defining elements of postrock, often quoted, is "the vocals become another instrument." (not just the loud:quiet:loud thing and other parts of the 'formula'). So vocals, per se, would not rule out a band like GIAA or Caspian (Waking Season) but Sigur Ros gets a bit touchy.... and Godspeed is in, but ASMZ/TSMZ is out. Owen - nice, nice list there, brother from another mother. Even laid it on the line with an album. My list will be up by the weekend. Back to work... abovetheearth
early GFE compared to last two GFE, more so... they should still count maybe?

I read that as you yelling "NO AMBIENTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!" hahahaha. No idea why. But I agree, none of that 'ambien' (haha) music in this list. mrewest
I guess we can do a majority rule on possible exceptions. I'd vote yes for GFE. My biggest question mark is for Athletics. Album 1: Pretty vocal heavy. Album 2: Not as much. I think we should vote on Appleseed Cast, too. I vote yes.

What should they be considered?
mrewest
Never listened to Blueneck. Guess I'll have to get on that to give an opinion. Also, are you kidding me with this Silent Whale Becomes a Dream album? Mother of God. Going through this whole thread brought out a few things I saw getting a lot of love that I never listened to. And first pass on this one is a bit jaw dropping.

batman
I vote no on the appleseed cast as well. the only albums that could be considered instrumental are LLO vol 1 & 2 and sagarmatha. every other one is pretty vocal heavy. some post-rock influence (more-so "real" emo), but are we going for post-rock in general or instrumental post-rock? sigur ros is definitely post-rock. same question though as above. eight1echo
I'll definitely post a list once the rules are finalized. Despite my love for them I'd vote no on Appleseed Cast, the majority of their stuff has prominent vocals.
