What's your White Whale record?

Recommended Posts

Whale : NOFX - The Longest Line on purple/grey/blue.

Grail : NOFX - Liberal Animation on blue (the pressing of >10 that was apparently for the band members or staff or whatever.

Whales exist but escape you over and over. Grails may not even exist, if you've seen one it's a whale not a grail.

Just a note, > means more than. < means less than

carpenter brut - trilogy

clams casino - instrumentals

+1 for good tastes.

As a means of inspiration - and not gloating - I want to mention that I landed a (blue) copy of Instrumentals at a relatively fair price, either last year or the year before.  Well after the steep going-rate was established.  I think it was via eBay, and I also believe it was in the $40 - $50 range?  The seller wasn't positive if it had even been played, and it looked pretty mint upon arrival.  Definitely a lucky find.  I'm sure you'll catch a break if you keep your eyes peeled.

I really wish parts 2 and 3 would get the vinyl treatment, too.

Finally found my #1 white whale today. Joe Hisaishi - "My Neighbor Totoro". This was the first Studio Ghibli movie I had seen and next to Spirited Away, my favorite of their soundtracks. The full score and songs were only pressed once in 1988 and has since been very difficult to find in Japan and ESPECIALLY the U.S., I got very lucky and was able to snatch this up when it popped up on discogs.

I was just thinking the other day how much I would love to own this.

As far as I or the good folks over at the fat wreck wiki know, the most limited pressing (other than tests) of Liberal Animation is red, not blue. The blue pressing was limited to 700, while the red is limited to <10.

Jets To Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary. One will come up eventually; I just haven't been quick enough off the mark on Discogs when they do.

Paw - Dragline. Thought I had this in the bag a few weeks ago. Didn't

Palomar - A World Without Horses. First of all - not THAT Palomar. This was an offshoot of Paw (above). Second, it's a CD. Never released on vinyl. Apparently only sold at shows. No Discogs entry. Found it to download on Bandcamp, which is something.

If you're not set on an original press...rumor has it that Orange Rhyming Dictionary will be getting the reissue treatment soon, along with a lot of older Jade Tree releases :D

Since people are on the topic of soundtracks... I'd love to somebody own a copy of the score the Chemical Brothers did for Hanna.  Apparently the only pressing done was for promotional purposes and the 1000 copies were just given away for free (to promptly be sold online of course).

I am one of said folks. The red you're referencing is mostly called burgundy, also very rare and a whale for sure. The blue I referenced is not the Epitaph repress, there's a yellow just like that one. This blue was supposedly a band member only pressing. Called it a grail, since not even a picture has ever surfaced.

Crap...stuff like this needs to stop being posted! It just adds to the long list of things I have to use google translate to search for.

Interesting! So, is this more limited blue ostensibly from the original Colossal Wassail pressing then?

Check out buy-nippon.com, it lets you search japanese auction sites. I haven't found this version of the soundtrack on there but have come across other totoro and ghibli soundtracks.

Been a good month...

  • Deftones 'Red Pony', after several weeks of negotiation finally have this in my hands!
  • Maylene and the Sons of Disaster II, clear w/ red splatter /200 (oh when will they press the whole catalog?)

And on a side note, not quite a 'white whale', but also got a sealed Beastie Boys Anthology for $80 at one of the local record shops. It's like they had it sitting in the back for 15 years, blew the dust off and put it up for sale.

Next white whales, Converge- Axe to Fall (shards), and Dillinger Escape plan - Ire Works, clear (band and friends edition)

Just got this in today. Was searching for a halfway decent price for the greater part of two years (only ever saw it for upwards of $120... ridiculous) and it finally appeared on Discogs for a very reasonable price. I was initially worried the seller was lying about its condition but it arrived today - no creases, bends, or dings; and vinyl looks completely unplayed. Not even a scuff. Really happy to finally own this.
