Documentaries.

Recommended Posts

Here is a list of stuff that i think is killer:

-The Weather Underground (documentary about the famous group from the 70's)

-The History of Rock and Roll (sure it's a bit dated, but FUCKING SOLID)

-This film is not yet rated

-King of Kong

-Second Skin

-All 3 of the Jesco White Movies

-The Original Warped Tour Documentary

-Starz Sex in the Cinema mini series

What's the 3rd Jesco White doc? I know there was the older PBS one that's mentioned in TWAWWOWV

Dancing Outlaw, Dancing Outlaw II: Jesco goes to Hollywood, and the most recent, The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.

Bumping this old thread because I just saw a really great documentary called "A.K.A. Doc Pomus" about one of the biggest songwriters of the 50s and 60s. It's worth a watch even if you don't have a particular interest in oldies music (which I don't). The guy's life was just so inspirational, and it's mind-blowing to see all the huge hits he had a hand in (Viva Las Vegas, Teenager In Love, This Magic Moment) and the artists he influenced (Dylan, Lennon, etc.)

No Philly dates as of yet. Film will not appeal to all but I'm pretty proud of it.

For Doc fans: The Square is just making its' release. It is really really good.

Other films of 2013 that I have enjoyed a lot:

The Crash Reel

Blackfish

Let the Fires Burn

God Loves Uganda

There are others but I'm hitting a blank for a moment. 2013 is a great year for docs.

I have been wanting to check the documentary you worked on out since you first mentioned it here. I'm hoping for a PDX screening.

We have very similar tastes as I have watched quite a few of the docs on your list.  I really liked Why We Fight.  Have you seen Into the Abyss?  It is really good as well.

You have a couple of real old boys in there. You need a few more Late-60s and 70s films. I'd recommend these to fill that gap:

- Marjoe

- Harlan County

- Gimme Shelter / Salesman / Grey Gardens (Maysles - gotta love em)

- A Time for Burning

- Gates of Heaven

- Don't Look Back

Also, I'm of the opinion that all lists need to include Hoop Dreams. It's a monumental achievement in the genre and an entertaining film to boot.

I haven't! I definitely want to, Herzog is his own genre he's so good (Aguirre, the Wrath of God is one of my favorite movies) And Why We Fight is incredible. I forgot a really really important one on my list (somehow). The Fog of War by Errol Morris is some next level shit. If you like Why We Fight, and haven't seen it I really highly recommend it!

I've been meaning to watch Harlan County (especially!), Gates of Heaven, and A Time for Burning, for a while and for one reason or another haven't had the opportunity. I'll check the others out for sure!!
