2014 Record Store Day - April 19

So here's a story. Last year I was third in line and there was a dude who got to the store at 3am (they opened at 8) all because the only thing he wanted was the DMB live box set. So right before they open, the owner comes out and explains that they only got one copy of it in and they decided to "hide it" in the store. Probably one of the most fucked up things ever. The guy luckily got it because the whole front of the line helped him out in looking for it, but they legit hid it in a dollar bin nowhere near the rest of the RSD stuff.

Messed up. Imagine if some flipper got it before he did and he went nuts..

Side note: 3am is kinda nuts..

If my store did that I would not go. I dont like crowds, and a million people running behind me to push me over to get a record would just kill the mood for me.

My store does it this way but it was peaceful last year. Maybe because Charleston has a small vinyl scene

Speaking of Video Game soundtracks....I noticed that RSD Canada added the Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag 2LP. DId your store get that?

I really would like that Assassin's Creed Soundtrack

I've been going to two stores right down the street from each other for years - Bull Moose and Newbury Comics in Salem, NH.

The experience at Bull Moose is among the worst things I've ever been a part of. They put the records in some bins and just let everyone in. It's a giant rush to get in, and because the records are in bins you have to flip through, only maybe 8-10 people can actually get anything resembling a reasonable look at the records at once. Despite this, you have 50-60 people seething around like a early-90s mosh pit trying to get a look at the records. It's terrible and I hate them for doing it. If that's how they're doing it again this year, I'm never going back to that store because fuck that.

Last year they broke it out so there was one set of 4 bins at the front of the store and one set at the back, which I guess at least spread out the mob around each bin, but then you had to fight through two mobs to get at records.

The Salem Bull Moose could easily solve this problem by only letting in 10 people at a time, but they've shown no signs of doing this over the 5-6 years I've been going.

The Newbury Comics right down the street used to just let everyone in the doors in a mob, but last year they had some good sense and started limiting it to about 10 or so people at a time, and they'd let another group in once those people were in line at the register or had left the RSD section for the rest of the store. It was pretty refreshing after dealing with the worst Bull Moose crowd yet.

The "menu" approach sounds really intruiging. I've never experienced that but it sounds delightful and civilized, which is the kind of thing I'd like to see in my RSD experience since it's usually barbaric.

This. It is convenient to have two stores so close, but the Bull Moose free-for-all is annoying. They also mix in all their sale and old RSD items into the bins which is annoying.

I can speak to this, but there are people that get pushy and literally grab what you go for because you are going for it. One year there was a guy holding like 7 copies of Jack White's 'Sixteen Saltines' 12" and like 6 copies of JEW's 'Damage' 7" just thinking they would flip....The store ended up making him put them back. Monster has a strict 1 copy of item per person mantra which is awesome!

But there is a decent line that backs up every year. For a short while there was Earshot right around the corner which got in  some awesome exclusives but they are closed now. So for Charleston there is only Monster now, but there is also Cat's still in Summerville.

I love the staff at Monster. They pretty much have a couple of everything I want but I'm still planning on being there by 5:30. I got there at 7 last year was number 30 in line

I definitely agree though, it is a great attitude at Monster, good staff and overall a pleasant experience! Monster does tend to get most of the interesting releases.

I can't even...

(sold listings on eBay)

http://www.ebay.com/sch/Records-/176985/i.html?_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&_nkw=RSD+2014&_ipg=200&rt=nc

People are paying $100 for One Direction and 7" singles -_-

There is no way people are buying those records for $100! There are at least 20 listings that ended at $99, I'm thinking, is there a way for the RSD guys to get eBay to pull listings?

Hmm probably, it's hard to believe.

This gave me a chuckle - "If you have any requests for a specific record please inform me as I live by 2 Amoeba record stores as well as countless others so securing a copy will not be an issue."

Like he's so sure..

Philly people: what are your plans? Last year I waited in line at Long in the Tooth for two and a half hours only to find out the records I wanted were sold out (not making that mistake again), but then I went to Repo and AKA and found everything. The only thing I (well, my sister) want that's going to sell out for sure is the One Direction single, so where do you think I should start and how early should I get in line?

Theres a chance I will be in Richmond, VA on RSD.

Any advice? I've seen Plan 9, but what time would I want to get there.

I usually go to my local one at 6 am and get free breakfast while I eat... sooo IDK what to do haha

Plan 9 is usually ok. They have the most RSD stuff. I got their 30 min before open last year and their werent many people. Show up early and you should get what you want. Steady Sounds usually has some stuff as well as like 20% off all used vinyl plus they give out snacks to those in line (think it was doughnuts last year). Ill be hitting those two and Vinyl Conflict. Maybe Ill see ya there.

So I really want to get the Mondo release this year for ParaNorman. Are the record stores only allowed a certain number of copies, or is it worth it to talk to them and see if they can order any last minute copies? Don't want to miss this!

Everything is definitely all shipped out by now. No where should be able to order more especially of something /500
