Guest
We've all been there. You adore a song for the longest time, and then POW! the original, probably several decades older, hits your ears, and your mind is blown. For example, this just inspired the thread
Out of Breath Records
I've noticed a widespread phenomenon about people who find out a song they like is a cover/find out a popular song is a cover of a song they like. Everyone likes the first one the heard usually better. It's interesting how the human brain just instantly biases it. Just rambling. grizzlyfoz
thebiglebowski
I always feel a need to point out that that "all I wanna do is boom boom boom and take ya money" (blanking on the name) is a sample of "straight to hell" by the clash but they don't really care
thebiglebowski
I could stick with the clash and admit that it was years before I figured out "I fought the law" was a cover
billya
I have met a few people who had no idea that "Meagan" by Bayside was a Smoking Popes song. ugh stuffsux00 and pushbacktosquare
abovetheearth
original: cover: (I liked The Knife first, and even KNEW the song, it just didnt register)
mameeshkamowskwoz
That Knife tune has been covered by Marco Benevento, too. For the record I fucking love Godley and Creme, but have not yet checked out 10cc.

topher
Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet. Also, had a friend in high school who was convinced beyond all measure that "Hurt" was an original Johnny Cash song. Yeah... stillalivetui
topher
I could stick with the clash and admit that it was years before I figured out "I fought the law" was a cover And now most people think it's a Green Day song...
Team Avatar
love the thread! like 7 years ago: Hollowed Be Thy Name - I liked Cradle of Filth's version for a LONG time and then finally found out it was an Iron Maiden cover..... kyacrash
"You Really Got Me" by the Kinks and covered by Van Halen is an interesting one in that they are both classics and both well known.
GradedOnACurve
So who covered who? Did Trisha Yearwood cover LeAnn Rimes or did LeAnn Rimes cover Trisha Yearwood? It was bizarre that "How Do I Live" was on the radio at the same time in the late 90's and that song was terrible...
SpazzyMcGee
My friend swore up and down that Tupac's "Changes" came before Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is" Dude couldn't understand what a sample was grizzlyfoz
RivannaJunction
I just figured out a month or so ago that "Love Buzz" is a cover. ... It is, isn't it? Also, this is on a lesser level, but I feel like people who know "Lean On Sheena" from The Bouncing Souls are often surprised to learn it is a cover. withengineheart
Heard CCR's 'I Put A Spell On You' and thought it was dope. Then heard Screamin' Jay Hawkins' original. Double dope.
radiatorhums
I'm still surprised when people think Hurt is an original Johnny Cash song.

chiefwahoo
Some 80s songs that I recently learned were covers. I still can't believe it. The originals went nowhere. Edit: Apparently Hazard never officially released this song himself, it's just a demo

mclz
A lot of great Clash tracks are covers besides I Fought the Law. You have Police and Thieves, Wrong Em Boyo, Brand New Cadillac, Police on my Back etc. I wouldn't be surprised if even a lot of big Clash fans didn't know how many cover songs they have on their albums. I've seen on more than one instance people crediting Joe with writing Silver and Gold. I even have a 7" with a cover of the track and they mention the song being written by him.
