RadDonut
Okay so I finally got through a few whole listens of Sunbather by Deafheaven. Every time I sit down to listen to it I just get bogged down by the vocals. I know VC loves this album so don't shame me or anything but I think it's a really great piece of work...without the vocals. If this album came out about 6 years ago I bet my 19 year old self would have loved it even more but that really isn't my cup of tea anymore. With that being said, what are some albums that you think would be better without the vocals or with a different vocalist altogether? My contribution is obviously the album mentioned above. slinch and AlexMBentley

Team Avatar
I love the vocals to death in RX Bandits but IF you were to remove them they would still sound awesome. Not better, but just as awesome. ajhall04
Zezima
The vocals are crucial to Sunbather

Guest
i love them, but i'm sure people would like Self Defense Family more without vocals
grizzlyfoz
Clams Casino's Instrumental Mixtapes are exactly this and they are so much better than when his compositions are rapped over and ruined. I'm God is probably the most notable example. Compare this: To this:
mrewest
100% agree with Sunbather. Plus the dude is a whack job in concert & just totally distracts from the incredible instrumentation. First time I heard them was when they opened for Russian Circles & all I could think was this band would be incredible if not for the singer. Ryan8765
I will say anything by Volbeat. Every now and then I catch a cool intro to a song on the radio. I start getting into it and then the verse picks up and that fucking guy starts "singing". Bleh!
dapeebs
Totally agree on Deafheaven. And I probably just have to give these guys more of a chance, but i like the instrumentals way more than the vocals of Between the Buried and Me. 8ight
Shitty Rambo
There's a way to 'rip' vocals using Audacity (free audio editing software). I've never tried it but you can find tutorials by searching 'how to karaoke Audacity'.
deletedunknown
I think you just invert the waveform and layer it with the original. It may cancel out everything that is the same on both left and right channels, though (since vocals usually are given equal balance). It was fun to play with when I first learned about it.Can't think of much I'd like without vocals. Sometimes I wish there were different vocals for bands though, SDF being one. I just can't get into that guys voice, but I think it would be great if Dave Smalley, Shawn Brown, or someone in that vein were the vocals. topher
I'm gonna say 1990's-present era King Crimson and (as much as it pains me to say it) a lot of Rush.
topher
And holy crap is Sunbather the yardstick for this thread. Got about a minute into "Dream House" and had to turn it off. Was loving the guitar sound, too. Shame.

jvphotoandvideo
My friends sometimes feel that way about Jane's addiction. Self Defense Family too. I guess I just dig vocalists that sound like frogs being boiled alive?
parkinglot
I've heard a number of people say they would prefer Pneuma by Moving Mountains if it was instrumental. I personally don't agree, but I could see a lot of people who are into post rock, but not emo-ish vocals say that.

Would be great without. Also, anything by The Sword. Killer music, but the vocals ruin it for me.
deletedunknown
There/Their/They're would probably work for me either without vocals or with Kinsella vocals instead. Side-project thread made me think of that.
