I got my learner's permit on my 16th birthday and then took driver's ed so I could get my license. I ended up not even bothering with getting my license until I was 18. Most of the hype surrounded the ensuing trial for indecency/murder, the snuff film/animal cruelty allegations, and the countrywide censorship of it for obscenity. There were more than a handful of kids in the tribes. Not sure how the laws are written but it seems like something some politician would have had a field day with. I mean, it obviously wasn't child porn, but that seems like something someone would have been upset about. Guess in the grand scheme of things that was the least of concerns America is a lot more loose in their restrictions than a lot of other countries (I'm looking at you Australia/New Zealand), though sexuality is a bit more taboo here than in Europe. Though, then again, this was in the wake of Deep Throat (or at least 8 years after), so there was a lot more laxity on sexuality in media since then.
