'La Dispute are not a band. La Dispute are an infection. A scratch that cannot be itched'

Recommended Posts

I've been exposed to a lot of music. I like a lot of music. And I like La Dispute.

I could've potentially felt this way at 16 or 17. I enjoyed a ton of cringe-inducing bands in high school, and even during the first year or two of college. I eventually weeded them out, fortunately. I'm sure I've still got some guilty pleasures in my collection, but nothing quite as cheesy as La Dispute.

More power to you and whomever else are enjoying them though. I know I'm rough on the band, but it's even more bullshit to allow internet opinions to sway your ability to enjoy an artist. It's for that reason that I'll be confining all my rants to threads like these, and allowing you LD fans to congregate and rejoice in your PO threads, unabashed.

Tell me what your worst fears are. I bet they look a lot like mine.
Tell me what you think about when you can’t fall asleep at night.
Tell me that you’re struggling. Tell me that you’re scared. No,
Tell me that you’re terrified of life.
Tell me that it’s difficult to not think of death sometimes.
Tell me how you lost. Tell me how he left. Tell me how she left.
Tell me how you lost everything that you had.
Tell me that it ain’t ever coming back.
Tell me about God. Tell me about love.
Tell me that it’s all of the above.
Say you think of everything in fear.
I bet you’re not the only one does.

They stored their passion in the creases in the corners of their mouths,
every angle of light from the open window washed their aged faces out.
They said, "Should we feel guilty for this sin?
Lord, did we kill a man and woman just to lie here skin to skin?"
"I wasn't happy. I wasn't happy where I was..
What is life without a purpose? What is purpose without love?
I pray my children will forgive me, though I bade the river flood.
I have washed my hands a thousand times but still can see the blood."
"Oh, great mercy, I am here to beg forgiveness for this mess.
I know I tore two worlds apart but I can't change the way I felt.
Love swept in like a storm and ripped the hinges from the doors.
Love poured in like a flood, I couldn't stop it anymore. I will not be drowned."
She said, "Lover, come and hold me, I am terribly afraid.
While you're shouting at the stars, my scars are not fading away."
He said, "Darling, I was begging heaven make them disappear, but,
See, I didn't get an answer or at least one I could hear."

Their songs are too long and their lyrics are embarrassing out of context. There are way worse bands out there though.

Of course, I haven't listened to them in over a year because every time I think about them I just listen to Mewithoutyou's first two albums instead.

I'm down with an hour long song if it has a reason to be. My favorite album of next year ends with  10 minutes of the vocalist yelling "All the dumb cocks/cunts/cops get what they want" and then 20 minutes of a former porn star talking about her life experiences. I like La Dispute but a lot of time I feel like their songs go on a bit too long.

This is probably the mildest criticism in the whole thread.
