Sad Heart
My thoughts exactly! "expensive white label" that's being called a test press. Pretty sure the only thing being tested is the patience of fans and completists. You know my heart aches. drds89

Gumbo72203
Haven't gotten a chance to listen to mine yet, but it looks gorgeous! Anybody with both releases, can you comment on the sound and any differences you hear? I'm curious to know if there's much of a difference, the way Isis' "Oceanic" remaster sounds completely different than the original (and not in a pleasing way for me). The Vool
It's been a trend for a couple of years to call these "Test Presses" and grab a bit more attention and $, but you well know they are just "limited, numbered, white label black vinyl." They don't need to listen to 50 copies to decide whether to proceed with the /500 run haha. As much as I love L&J's work, I think this constant "/50 TP"-sales are a regressed step that makes TMS one of many cash grab labels out there... This said, they should finally release the Jakob records
batman
what's with all the negativity? if you don't want it, don't buy it. nobody is forcing anyone to buy every variant of every record. L&J are good people and deserve every penny they make. it's not like TMS is some huge operation and they're sitting in a back room somewhere plotting get rich schemes. it's a labor of love--a unique way of releasing small runs that core fans of the music can enjoy and the label makes a little extra to fund new releases. that's a win-win in my opinion. i'd much rather see them release things like this and repress the hell out of their back catalog than be forced to close. there's obviously a demand for both these limited "test presses" and back catalog represses, so you can't fault them too much. it's called trying to make a living. drds89
No negativity here! You know I love J&L and want TMS to thrive. I fully bought all the previous /50 "TPs" up until this release - which is not a diss on them at all. It's a personal decision re: cost/desire, nothing more or less And I knew fully what I was buying with all the others, happily. But let's be honest: they are not Test Presses. I wouldn't call it a cash grab any more than represses that people keep snatching up - demand is there, you're a fool not to sell into it. #capitalismisnotevil

If this helps the band and the site, why not? But once you learn that you can't have everything out there (which is why collecting variants, in this day and age is crazy) then you can pass easily. I just wish they wouldn't call them "Test Presses".

I agree that a "/50 TP" is universally frowned upon.
Sad Heart
But let's be honest: they are not Test Presses. I love J & L to death, but this is all I'm saying.
mrewest
I think J & L have come to learn that their loyalists love 99% of their output. Maybe they are just testing fate to see how long they can get away with the /50 "tests". I agree, that a simple name change of that press would be wise, because it's not a test. Had they done another run of 100 with a "stained glass" cover, I would have snatched that up no problem. Even if it was $30 (probably still not $40). But also, voicing an opinion against something isn't being "negative". It's a valid gripe, especially when most people here probably have spent upwards of >$1000 on the Sheath. J & L know how many variant collectors they have. And they know most people will buy everything they put out. But maybe if they notice the "regulars" not snatching these up, they'll rethink what they are doing. And I agree with the above post, get those Jakob records out!! Sad Heart
It would be weird not to have that test friend press in your collection Dave I don't really do TPs. I lucked into the two I have, and I'm not worried about finding the others. I mean, maybe I'll grab it at some point. I don't know. Haha. adamha21
I have the translucent green. Kinda noisey to be honest. Last rites and sycamore especially. Gave it a wet clean and still has some irritating surface noise. I've noticed much of what is coming out of Pirates press now seems to be like this. Gumbo72203
Spun mine yesterday for the first time, and I thought it sounded awesome. Nice and quiet, like most TMS releases. I thought the fades after the first few songs were kind of abrupt, but that's minutia. Would have loved to have a take on other "You Are The Conductor" material from this venue, though. Man, if they played the opening triumvirate, or Loft... that sound would have been tremendous. Loved hearing the crowd after that Sycamore, though. But yeah I found that YouTube clip as well. It's awesome. Wonder if they'll release it as a bside or something someday.

I don't think you'll find anyone here thats had similar problems with Mylene. They tend to be fucking awesome 100% of the time. I always get emails returned from them within a few days.
