But do the 7"s have to be in the the 12" sleeve?

Couldn't the 7"s come in their own sleeve and then stick them in between the gatefold and think poly bag over everything to keep them in place?

19.99 plus 4.99 X 3 would be my price point on this.

I think $30 would be the fair price point because a single LP shouldn't be $19.99.  PJAM's Benaroya Hall was four 12"s in a deluxe box for $35.  More power to SRC for aiming for a profit though.  They know they'll sell and i'll probably cave and get one.  I have no clue what licensing fees they're paying and all that but either way $50 for this is steep.

I just wanted to throw some numbers in the ring. No idea what licensing for this costs, no idea which pressing plant they used. But if I use Gotta Groove's price card it comes out to something like this.

2500 180 gram black records: $7200

2500 colored 7" records: $3175.

$7200 + (3)$3175 = $16,725

+Triple Gatefold $4925 = $21,650

+Say it costs $2 to cut each one jacket ($5000) = $26,650

No idea what licensing costs but say it costs $40,000 which would be nuts. = $66,650

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

2,500 copies at $30 = $75,000

2,500 copies at $40 = $100,000

2,500 copies at $50 = $125,000

Very interesting. Thanks for putting this together. I wonder what the labor costs are; packing 2,500 records has to take some time, I'd think. I don't oppose SRC making a profit--they're a business, obviously--but I'd certainly be more inclined to buy if it were around $40.

This all looks fine and good, but you forgot the $50,000 R&D expenses that went towards trying to figure out how to cut a hole to fit a 7" into the gatefold. They said it themselves, it's the most complex design they've ever seen!

Why didn't they just spread all the songs out over two LPs and tack on the bonus tracks at the end? Probably cost less to produce, in my completely uneducated opinion. I mean, the 7" idea is cool, but I'd rather just have the songs on LP if it's going to cost me so much to have them all as seperate pieces.

what would have been even better is if they pressed each song individually on a 7" and then sold a subscription for $109.99 that included all of them in 4mm poly sleeves.

sounds about like the my chemical romance 7" series. $59 shipped for the five 7"s altogether or $69 to get them as they were released.

with the discount, i figure $19.99 for the LP (afterall that's what we'd pay at HT or a similar retailer) and about $7.99 per 7" (which is again about what you'd pay in retail for a major label release). not to mention the nice packaging. meh.

edit: and actually HT sold it for $21.99

edit2: and that shit is taxed, isn't tax included in the price at SRC?

This is how I justified it to myself
