  1. Haha. I know nothing about Dada but those two songs are actually pretty cool.

This feels like the band equivalent of your aunt/uncle thinking the box of overproduced 70s albums in their garage would "probably go for a lot on eBay". I also like to imagine the company who pressed these charging them 40 per unit and the band are just trying to make a small profit.

  2. The 2018 Topshelf Records subscription is up! Be sure to enter my code RICHFELI into the notes section during checkout & you'll get a $10 store credit as part of their new referral system for this year. Use it on a shirt or some tapes. :)

Big thanks to anyone who uses my code! The 2017 sub was probably my favorite label sub I did this year, both because the genre range and quality of releases was awesome and because Robbie is doing the Lord's work in their shipping/customer service department. I signed up for 2018 as soon as it went up a few weeks back.

I always wondered if they included the rare test presses they sometimes sell, but never got a clear answer.

Yeah. I'm also a little confused on where the line is between a new release, an old release that is getting a new vinyl pressing, and an old release that is getting pressed on vinyl for the first time and which ones I'd get.

I reached out to them on social media a few days ago with a question on that and haven't heard back. That lack of clarity plus this year's sub being $50 more than 2017 with no real details on why is making me lean toward playing it safe and skipping on subscribing.

  4. I'm looking into the Stones Throw Records vinyl sub for 2018. It's $380 after CA tax and shipping for everything they put out on vinyl in 2018.

I wanted to see if anyone here subbed in 2017 and what your thoughts were. It seems like it's not a huge savings to pay $380 for 12-17 pieces of vinyl but they mention shipping some items before the street date and perhaps having some sub member exclusives (a Jay Dilla 7" this year). What did you enjoy/not enjoy about subbing in the past? What would you share with someone who is thinking of subbing?

  5. Maybe Brand New share the same perspective as many of the great hermeneutical scholars who argued that there is no 'replication'; every time we return to a work, having experienced life and expanded our horizons in the meantime, we do so with a new version of ourselves which must produce a new reading and, therefore, a new meaning. When we listen to Science Fiction after having had our subjectivity altered by the fragrance of the potpourri, the tactile congruence of the crunchwrap cover, and the comforting heft of the 2 pound tub of root beer barrels, we are effectively hearing 12 brand new Brand New songs.

  6. No need to be defensive about supporting Brand New. We stopped complaining about Jesse Lacey grooming underage Brand New fans for sex once we were educated on how art can be seperated from the artist, there are other members in the band, it was a long time ago, at least one of the women seemed like she wanted it, there are women in general who sometimes lie about being over 18, and you don't care, you'll like what you like and no one can tell you what to do.

Seems like a good place to bring this up: when did Discogs start blocking "unofficial releases" from sale? I noticed it a couple weeks ago that certain bootlegs or unofficial pressings have this notice in place of the section that usually shows stats for how many users have it in their collections, average price, etc:

    Example from my collection: https://www.discogs.com/Bullion-Presents-The-Beach-Boys-Vs-J-Dilla-Pet-Sounds-In-The-Key-Of-Dee/release/2058216

So why is Discogs a bunch of narcs now? Maybe gearing up to sell the site, or somehow go "legit" in some form?

It started a few months ago. It sucks, especially if you're collecting old live bootlegs from the 80s/90s that are already circulated and out there.

Speaking of...I have about 40 different R.E.M. bootlegs. Most of them from Discogs pre-2017 bootleg raid. I'd be glad to answer any Qs anyone might have about the very specific subject that is R.E.M. bootlegs.

Beyond those, I have 6-7 Talking Heads boots, that Green Day: Broadcasting Live bootleg, and a few other randoms that I'm not recalling.

Edit: I also have the Smashing Pumpkins at Del Mar Fairgrounds boot. I had the Nirvana: Live on KAOS boot but I sold that one. I didn't really need to edit this post to list those two but hey.
