asylvain
I guys, I'm interested to buy some new vinyl records. But how can I make sure that the master source is really analog master tape? Is there a code or a key words printed on the jacket or directly on the disc? I' m not interested to buy vinyl copied from a digital master source. Thanks very much Alain caninesapien and ratbrain

funtitled
You buy the record, and hit it with a hammer. If it doesn't break you have a good master and insured to have a quality 180g High- fidelity record. Or you can ask the seller to do it for you. I have been handling records since 1984 and it has always worked for me. -Block piky0032, THE_James_Champ and corey.

slinch
OP, avoid VC with threads like this. People here buy records for colors, not sound. That's why you'll get asshole responses to a legitimate question. But to the point, rarely you'll see any info regarding source material on the release itself. It depends on what kind of music you usually buy. If you're into genres where sound quality is "more important", chances are that labels releasing them feel the same way and do whatever they can to achieve that. Most indie labels though don't even know enough about this to be able to make a smart decision. The article 74R posted a few posts up is a great place to start, here's their shortlist of labels who at least try to give the consumer some useful information and are known for quality pressings from analog sources: We do get it from certain labels, like Mobile Fidelity, ORG, ORG Music, Analogue Productions, Music Matters, IMPEX, Mosaic, Rhino, Pure Pleasure, Speakers Corner, Reference Recordings, more recently Sony/Legacy and probably a few others I can't recall off the top of my head. I'm not good with lists. TFP, caninesapien, gabpower and 6 others

funtitled
I have tried this method, and it's not always fool-proof. Hmmm, why yes. I have had a few times where this was not accurate, but I still recommend attempting it most occasions.

mrrom92
It's very much a case by case basis. Now labels are even being misleading about it by tricky wording that indicates that analog masters were used, but not indicating that there was a digital step in between. when it is made known to you, you will know. There are plenty of labels who will only release this way.

kurtz
Steve Albini may argue with you on that one as I'm pretty sure he still does. That is true. You would be hard pressed to find many others that do. Tape is much more expensive and more difficult to use. Digital recording is so high quality today that the sound difference is negligible anyway. Anyone that tells you they can tell the difference is a liar.
