castaway
I've stacked my 2x4 upright on top of another 5x1 on it's side, which had casters on it. Pretty solid stuff.

radiatorhums
I'm so afraid when I see the 2x4 standing up right. Am I crazy to think all that weight shouldn't be that high up on a piece of ikea furniture? Never had an issue with my 2x4 being upright. My dog likes to sleep underneath it, so hopefully I never do! kevinxabney
I think it was just the really big one that had problems when it was fully loaded with records. I don't remember the size of it, but it was the largest option they offered. That just stuck with me.
allenh
These are both quite old and I have made a few trips to Ikea since to get more storage. I will post a couple more when I get the room tidied. Sugar Shane, swinx, TFP and 4 others
kevinxabney
Yeah, like that. Haha. Are those reinforced?
robotfactory
The 2x4 Expedit is actually meant to be used upright, laying it on its side makes it weaker. I have a 5x5 completely filled. I did not reinforce it at all, just anchored it to the wall. If you bolt these bastards to the wall, and use them correctly, they aren't going anywhere. tape
If you look at any of the "OMG EXPEDIT FAIL" pictures on the web, you'll notice that they're all set up the wrong way. Here's a pretty good example: The shelves are made up of long pieces that extend the full length of the Expedit and short pieces that are only the size of one cube. Notice how the long pieces are(/were) mounted vertically and the short pieces horizontally? That's the problem. If you look at any of these images, you'll see the same thing. niblips

shamrocks
yes the point is that there are full length shelves for you to rest your records on that are divided and supported with small spacers...not the other way around

timsimmons
Those shelves weren't anchored to the walls. Doing that will add additional support to the frame of the shelves. Also, you should tighten the screws once a year too.
albert
I've seen those pictures quite a few times, but they always hurt to look at. Like, real bad. But the funny part is that the directions to make this shelf are pretty straight forward to follow.
bluessinger
I bought 1"x 2"x whatever plywood and added support to the back of all mine. Also, it keeps everything nice and tidy, and can't push through the back.

allenh
Those collapsed expedit pictures made me have one of those sympathetic sucking in of air moments. I bought 1"x 2"x whatever plywood and added support to the back of all mine. Also, it keeps everything nice and tidy, and can't push through the back. I thought about doing something like that but it's going to be quite a job now to empty all mine to put the board on the back, I did think about the board that has a white vinyl coating so that it reflects a bit of light. The only downside of that is that I will make any gaps on my shelves more obvious driving me to want to fill them in even more.
