PostVillasBlues2K
Whew. So I literally just finished combing through all 125 pages of this thread (over the last several days). I've been taking in ideas and racking my brain on how to mod my setup to make it kid-proof. I have a four year old who is actually quite trustworthy and a 1.5 year old who is a little master of destruction. There's also a steady stream of neighbor kids etc who would put my stuff at risk even if I knew that my kids were careful enough. Anyways, there was surprisingly little good info here on child proofing, but I did glean a lot of useful tidbits. Here's what I came up with. If it works, hopefully some other parent can benefit the experience. In order to make this work I had to sell it to my wife so I made a mock up in illustrator. The scale is correct for all of the different components: my tv, receiver, turntable, speakers, expedits, etc. It was actually a lot of fun to work it up. I live a long ways away from an Ikea so I needed to make sure everything would fit right structurally for logistics sake. I'm probably only able to fill those four squared with vinyl at this time, all the others would be for my wife to organize how she would like. So the answer to the child proofing question is height. Therein also lies the problem. That is the danger structurally of having all that weight up there, especially with how the expedits are built. What I'll end up doing is some major reinforcement to the 1x5 bridge section. Some sort of steel bars to span beneath it, as well as some metal straps/brackets on the back section. I dunno but that will have to be substantial. The two verticals have the upper middle divider removed to provide space for the turntable and receiver. I'm aware that this will also compromise the integrity of the structure, but hopefully some reinforcement of the back will help enough. After that anchor it all together, and anchor again to the wall and bam. I know it's not good to have the speakers on there, but for now that can't be helped. Any useful feedback would be appreciated, thanks. Anchoring aside, I think you're good. I don't think removing the top dividers from the two vertical units will compromise their integrity by much, if at all, given the weight of each shelf rests on the singular vertical dividers. I have a 2x4 expedit on its side and tend to worry about so much weight resting on those tiny wooden pegs. The top 1x5 should be cool too, the slabs of particle board that surround expedits seem really beefy to me so I highly doubt it will sag/droop at all. The only real concern is that it's a shit ton of weight to anchor so far up. I'm not sure what kind of wall you're attaching this to. The only other option I can think of (granted I'm not sure what you plan on using the two vertical 2x4's for), is buying the swinging door accessories they offer for expedits and figuring out a way of locking them and skipping that 1x5 altogether. I'm not an expert in anything remotely close to this kind of thing though so, you know, grain of salt. take pics when you get it up and running, I freaking love the pics in this thread. edit: also, how good at climbing are your kids? because if they climb, a full expedit could severely injure, if not kill a toddler easily. derby625
JayAreEss
I see the Daughter E.P. hiding back there, quality choice Sho nuff. I didn't even know that was on vinyl. I was about 2 hours from home (because there are ZERO record stores where I live) and I randomly found it in a record store. Was pretty stoked. salaho
My kids aren't allowed in the room where my records/set-up is, unless me or their mum is with them! Adequate supervision should stop all the issues you're talking about!
thefinalsound
My kids aren't allowed in the room where my records/set-up is, unless me or their mum is with them! Adequate supervision should stop all the issues you're talking about! That would be ideal, but we live in a small place right now, so it's all basically in the living room. We can't really lock the kids out of there very easily without totally disrupting normal life. "edit: also, how good at climbing are your kids? because if they climb, a full expedit could severely injure, if not kill a toddler easily." I won't be anchoring it to the wall using the Ikea anchors, I'll be putting heavy hardware into the wall studs at multiple points to insure that it goes absolutely nowhere. ajxd
I think the issue with that photo above 1) weight and 2) distance between the turntable and the receiver. That should only be like, 3'...
thefinalsound
I think the issue with that photo above 1) weight and 2) distance between the turntable and the receiver. That should only be like, 3'...ajxd, I assume you're talking about my illustration, not the actual photo the other guy posted? Anyways thanks for chiming in, I had not considered the distance between the reciever and turntable. I estimate that it would take a 6' interconnect to link them up, which would I'm sure be less than ideal. How about this though, what if I had a phono preamp right next to the turntable, then a longer cable running to the receiver? Would that shorter distance between the 'table and where the signal is actually boosted effectively solve the problem of to distance to the receiver? As far as weight is concerned I will most likely fabricate an under structure from steel running the length of the horizontal shelf, so that the shelf itself would not support its own weight. withengineheart
Moved some shit around in my tiny apartment and found a less claustrophobic solution given the amount of space I have to work with: Bought another Expedit 2x4 and put it on its side. We have rabbits that like to chew on shit to mark their territory.. so I filled in the bottom with drawers and doors. Really stoked how it turned out. My 7''s and 10''s are next to the books there. Gonna eventually need to move the turntable somewhere else so it's not so close to the speaker, but hey. Pleased in the meantime until I move to a bigger apartment. Again, bottom two made out of hay so the little shits have something to chew on other than records. Bought an LED lamp which I'm stoked on. Pretty sure 3/4 of my apartment are IKEA products.. welcome to Scandinavia.
smailtronic
edit: also, how good at climbing are your kids? because if they climb, a full expedit could severely injure, if not kill a toddler easily. My daughter is almost four and she knows not to touch the tv, or climb on our tv expedit. My records are in a 2x2 and 2x4 (lying on its side), so no worries about tipping over. kyacrash
so my 5x5 expedit is kept in one room and my turntable and stereo are in the living room. I'm looking to get a small shelf type thing to keep in my living room to hold a few records at a time that I'm currently listening to or in the queue to listen to. maybe hold like 25 records total. anyone have any suggestions of a good piece of furniture for this scenario?? geezfools
I thought it was a huge no-no to put speakers on the same shelf as the turntable? isavedlatin54
thefinalsound
It is definitely a huge no-no. I just can't avoid it for the time being. In reality I do a lot of headphone listening anyways so it doesn't matter that much.
trevorxramage
It is definitely a huge no-no. I'm embarrassed to have to ask this but is this just a no-no because it degrades sound quality or is it an issue with the albums themselves? seamoney
Sound quality. Don't put anything near your turntable that will add unnecessary vibrations. It will create distortion.

withengineheart
Next update will be of my turntable at my house and me speakers at my neighbors house. The sound quality is so good next door! 0 fucks given. My ball hairs don't need to sway in accordance to the grooves in a record. nothingnatural
withengineheart
Pretty sure this topic comes up every 2 pages of this thread. Not owning a bangin' system (can't afford one, would rather spend more dough on music quantity, or don't give a shit) doesn't mean that you have a lesser appreciation for the vinyl format. Some are audiophiles and want to bring the recording session to their living room, some want to hold a good record, spin it and feel more connected to the artist by experiencing them though a physical/audio medium, many seek the feeling of ownership or stock in a band by hording everything they've released (ending up with more variations of releases than the band members themselves own) and the rest buy records to know they have it, can visualize that they have it and pull it out when the time, mood and situation is right. I'm not one to prefer quantity over quality (whether than means set-up wise or pressing wise). If you're pleased, it's good enough. Organize your setup after what pleases you, not what pleases a message board. gabpower
Nice and clean. If those are ported floor standing speakers, I'd pull them out from the wall more... Thanks. By "ported", you mean the breathing holes of the tower? They have one each in front if my memory is right. I'll check that out tonight. I guess having them in front doesn't change anything.
