  1. This thread started out as a parody, but was then beefed up with answers to questions and tidbits of information that a lot of new members may not know. Lock it. Merge it. Elaborate on it. Do what you feel. If there's positive reception here, I will definitely flesh it out and make it into a VC Newbie Guide, in an attempt to address the majority of reoccurring questions before they can even be asked. ========== In order to sell, trade, and buy records without being shat on, we would like to bring out some new guidelines. Most of them are common sense, but it’s becoming apparent that said common sense is sometimes left outside the forums. Please do read these rules and take them on board; ignorance is no excuse for being clueless. !! Editing a Thread So you bought or sold something, and now you want set up another transaction? Please edit the title of the thread appropriately, revising as much detail where possible. This prevents the forum from running rampant with excessive requests. To edit the title of topic, click the Edit button of the thread's first post, followed by the Use Full Editor button. (Note: you only have this ability if you possess the first post of the thread, and are thus the thread creator.) Revise as you see fit. An added benefit to this is the accumulation of replies and views. Members are more likely to pay attention to a five page thread with actual discussion and transactions taking place, than five separate threads where the OP posts the word "bump" or "." in succession. !! Ebay Threads 2.0 Don't make them. But if you must, they should be posted here, as specified. Furthermore, if you do choose to use the designated thread, and are asking ridiculous Buy It Now prices - or have set absurd reserves - the community is entitled to harass and troll you. Think of it as a small cost of doing business around these here parts. !! Courtesy 2.0 Do not be shitty. As a buyer; do not troll sellers with lowball prices. Offering $0.99 for a $15 record isn't funny, and impresses no one. Nor is trading a MC Hammer 7" for a copy of Deja Entendu. No one wants to read through sarcastic offers. Come back when you mean business. Or when you have something more clever to suggest, at the least. As a seller; Do not strut in here looking for "close to eBay" prices. Do not gloat about the 10+ copies of the Hot Topic exclusive you have for sale. Do not use top dollar Popsike auctions as a reference to what you think your records are worth. Do not say "PM with offers", and proceed to ignore any price you're not satisfied with. Do not expect to receive what you paid for your records. Especially if you overpaid. !! Bumping 2.0Please post entertaining GIFs, videos, or links while bumping a thread. We get that you're looking to complete your Circa collection. You've made it very clear. But why not have some common courtesy and avoid boring us to death in the process? !! Disputes 2.0 Public shaming is the way to go... assuming you've been reasonable and have tried to contact the other party on several occasions. Sometimes shit happens. Such is life. There is no need to panic until it has become blatantly clear that you're being ripped off. At which point the rest of us would love to read the conflict, weigh in, and critically judge the offender. !! Communication 2.0 Communication is key. If you don't have e-mail notifications synchronized with your private messages, you're doing it wrong. !! Sale Spoiling 2.0 "Please do not march into a thread and state that you can get an item for $X on eBay or some other online store. Or that you're selling the same item for less. If you think their price may be too high, don't be rude about it. If others feel the same way, then it won't sell." While this is true, it can (and should) be negated if the seller is being a complete asshole. (Exhibit A.) VC rules state that members shouldn't interfere with a sale thread, but this rule only carries so much weight. I don't care how many times you may quote the guidelines or try to cower behind this rule; if you're trying to sell a record that's readily available for 200% of its MSRP, you're gonna' have a bad time. The community is quick to call out the bullshitters and blatant flippers. And that's a stank you can't easily shake. !! Raffles 2.0 Under no circumstances will we allow users to host or conduct raffles on the boards... unless you're Secular Haze. In which case, raffle away. !! PPD PPD = Postage Paid. The total cost, with shipping included. !! Math & Costs Just so we're in the clear. When you sell something on eBay, you receive ~86% of the final selling price. (-~14%) When you sell something on Discogs, you receive ~92% of the final selling price. (-~8%) This is why it's practically expected that you'll be asking for a lower selling price here at Vinyl Collective. At the absolute maximum, you should be asking for the average eBay cost minus 14%. This puts the same amount of money in your pocket - compared to selling on eBay - and gives a fellow VC member a nice little price break. To ship a single record in the U.S., the base price is $2.98. Add a dollar for tracking. Most people tack on an additional dollar for every additional item. !! Paypal This is the preferred method of payment. When sending money via Paypal, your address is not automatically included. You need to provide this to the seller via PM, or in the comments section of your Paypal transaction. I prefer both places to be safe. When you send money via Paypal, you have two options. GIFT You can Gift the payment. (This option is now specified as "Payment to Friends and Family", I believe.) This should only be done with members your trust. + Pros: they receive 100% of the funds you send. - Cons: assuming the exchange goes south, Paypal cannot intervene, and you cannot be refunded. When you Gift a payment, consider that money gone for good. This is why it's critical to make sure it goes into the right hands. EXCHANGE FOR GOODS This is to be used when dealing with members you aren't familiar with, and is a safe rule of thumb in general. This is specified by ticking the "Exchange for goods or services" button in Paypal. Paypal will pocket 3% of the total transaction; you will have the option of taking the hit on your end, as a buyer [which just means you'll be paying a tad more], or you can deduct it from the amount the seller will be receiving. The latter is rude, in my opinion. The seller should be receiving an amount for the price you've agreed on, and not a penny less. + Pros: your purchase is backed. If there is a dispute of any sort, Paypal is able to investigate and intervene. - Cons: you're paying an extra 3% on top of your transaction.

    Upcoming Hot Topic Releases

Some Ferret Records stuff is coming (dont ask, info will come out when it's time) but Static Lullaby isnt part of it. I tried but it's not possible. MCR - working on some stuff Sing the Sorrow - Universal doesn't own the vinyl rights as far as I know. I think a repress will happen sooner than later on this.

EDIT: and you are basically suggesting that this man is lying about losing his father to cancer. because this seems to be the reason he's decided to donate to cancer research.

  8. To shed some perspective on the whole 2-3 months salary thing.. That tradition started as more of a way to show financial stability and fiscal responsibility, whether to your parter or to her family. Similar concept of a dowry way back when brides were a negotiated commodity. A way of showing a father that you can provide for his little girl. The tradition of a bride price is absurd but the sentiment behind being able to spend 2-3 months pay on a ring isn't so bad IMO. The idea isn't to just go and drop 25% of your yearly income and then be broke.. The idea is to save that amount and be able to comfortably spend it without feeling the hit of dropping that much coin. Starting a marriage in debt is a) not that fun and b ) probably a given, but with responsible saving/spending practices it can be easily overcome. My wife and I have a goal of having a savings account with 6 months of combined pay as an emergency fund. Are we there yet? No. But we will be by the end of 2014 because we've set measured and attainable savings goals over the last two and a half years. I'm not saying you should spend 2-3 months pay on a ring. If your gal doesn't need a big status symbol like that on her finger- more power to her, but to be able to say, "get the one you really want" is pretty fucking cool (It's also cool when the one she really wants ends up costing $3,000 less than you've saved and you can put that towards something else like a downpayment on a house). Anyway- long post to say that my marital advice is based on the concept of fiscal responsibility. I realize this concept has no place on a board built around this hobby, but for what it's worth- a solid savings plan may prohibit you from having absolutely everything you want, but at the end of the day it makes you feel really good when something comes up to be able to turn to your wife and say, "we can afford it," or "we're gonna be ok."

  10. I love the attempt to encourage mature behavior on a forum filled with a bunch of kids. Good luck with that. So far, a lot of the people I've encountered on this board (particularly the ones that feel they have some sort of superiority or tenure over others because they've been around longer) are nothing more than condescending jerk-offs that think they know everything, whine about everything, and treat the "outsiders" like crap. I want to say the nice guy/mean guy ratio is about 1/5. Proceed with the downvotes, but remember, no amount of downvotes are going to make what I said untrue.

  11. im looking for advice! nothing too specific off the top of my head, but anything and everything you can offer tips wise. Heres the deal, my girlfriend and i have been together for 3ish years, shes my best friend we are basically the same exact person. love at first sight and all that mushy stuff. im looking to making the next step for us but i really dont know what im doing. i know some couples do all of this together, but i dont want to do that, i want it to be a total surprise. im at a total loss at what i should spend on a ring and what i should look for in a ring, i know you guys cant give details on what she would like, i think i can do that part fine, i just dont know what to look for/stay away from when it comes to jewelry. were both really big into music and vinyl and im looking to make this happen over Punk Rock Bowling weekend in may. ive got a few ideas and have a hookup with one of our favorite bands that will be playing this year to make it the special 'concert proposal' if i decide to go that route. not totally sure yet. im mainly concerned with the ring at the moment. also, share with me what you did when you proposed! i want to know what happened with you guys, maybe i can snag some ideas.

  13. After years of hard work and getting screwed out of his retirement by the Enron scandal, my grandpa was finally able to retire. Today was his last day of work. When he got home, he went with my grandma out to the field in their backyard and they blasted his lunchbox, hard hat, and thermos to bits with a shotgun. What a guy.

  21. I got my wife a 5/8 ct solitaire for engagement and an accented ring guard instead of a wedding band. they solder them together into one and it looks really good. didn't really break the bank, I think it was about $2000 or so for both. (interest-free financing from zales really saved my ass as a broke college kid). and really for a petite girl, anything larger than that is overkill. also, if you get it from a big jewelry store, make sure you get a lifetime protection plan. it's a little more to spend, and you'll have to take it in every 6 months for cleaning/maintenance, but they'll cover you for a lot of things like loose fittings or missing stones. for something that'll be worn every day through everything, it's definitely nice to have. slightly OT, for your wedding ring check out cobalt. it's got more weight than titanium, is a lot more durable than gold, and is really cheap!

  23. my wife and I dated for 5 years, took a couple week vacation one summer a couple years ago in Italy, packed the ring in my carryon, and hid it until the 2nd to last day of vacation when we visited the Isle of Capri. we were on top of the Isle, walking down this pathway that was hundreds of years old, overlooking the sea/town below and I asked her. totally caught her off guard, said yes, yaddayadda. just get a ring you think your lady would like, dont worry about money, its about taste and style, if your future wife doesnt care about diamonds there are other gems you could get. I didnt spend close to 2-3 months salary on a ring, but then again, my wife wasnt interested in a giant rock on her finger. my wedding band cost $250? might be about as simple as can be, tungsten band. her's is white gold

  28. I'm not bragging. I'm not going to sell it. I don't even care how much it's worth; I was actually unaware of its worth until today. I guess it's inconvenient that my first post was one where I mentioned my (probably) most valuable record, but I really wasn't trying to brag. I was just mentioning why I wasn't super upset about missing the Dog Problems white vinyl reissue--I already have a copy. I couldn't care less of its worth.

  35. My wife was also low-maintenance. I ended up getting my late grandmother's wedding ring from my aunt (paid her $200 for it I think?). My wife and I aren't poor, but we're a step above poor (almost poor). She liked vintage stuff, and the ring is way different than your normal engagement ring. So she was pumped that it came from the family and looked different than anyone else's. The wedding band she picked out was a lot more expensive. She purchased mine on Etsy and it is super rad. I love it. Basically, don't go broke on this stuff. It sounds like you won't, and your soon-to-be-wife will love you just the same. Our wedding was ridiculously DIY to save money. Cupcakes. Home-made food. Keg-beer and three-buck-chuck all day. The most expensive part of our wedding was the photography (dropped more on that than we did on the rest of the wedding combined). That's what was important to us though, and it was well worth it. We ended up in a publication over in Europe called Rock and Roll Brides: http://www.rocknrollbride.com/2013/02/fairytale-woodland-wedding-emily-casey/ In the end, your love and your special day shouldn't be full of stress about money... That's my advice.

  38. Let me tell you what I wish I would have done; Do to proximity and me being a nervous wreck, I didn't get down on one knee- there were several obstetrical in my way (we were at a restaurant) and I figured me trying to push around a bunch of bullshit would have made it very uncomfortable for my woman because she doesn't like attention and I didn't want to make a scene. There, in front of my 1 year old daughter, I asked her to be my wife. Sitting next to her... Ugh. Ideally I would have made it more romantic and what I wish I would have done was ask her at home in our bedroom (you'll want to be near a bed dude). As stupid as it sounds, I feel the awkwardness of our proposal made it 'special'. The "during a band's set" proposal has been done over to death, if you do it at home where she wouldn't expect you'll knock her damn socks off. Are there any quirks you have in your relationship? Try and take something she doesn't think much about that you notice and play into that (notes in your lunchbox, daily emails or calls, stuff like that). She'll love the attention to detail and know that you love her more than anything. As far as rings go, just get what's in your budget. You don't need to go all out. I bought my wife something respectable but told her that once we got our bands fitted that she could pick out a combo dealy- where they mount an engagement ring to a wedding band. I spent so much on her band/engagement ring when she got to pick it out that the jeweler threw my band in for free HA! Don't stress to much about it, you don't want to give her some cheap hunk of steel, but perhaps aim in the $800-$1200 range. The ring should be secondary, the proposal should be your top priority.

  41. I think it's annoying how Interpunk sells things that they don't have in stock as having them in stock because they are eventually going to receive some. Seems like every order I make on there, not everything is readily available and the dates keep getting pushed back. The best part is when the status says "Expected Tomorrow," and then I check tomorrow and it says "Expected in 3 days" or a week or "soon." I know that's not completely their fault, but why list stuff as in stock if you don't even know for sure when you're getting them? That being said, I've never had a negative experience from them and generally the stuff arrives and gets shipped out... I just checked my order status, one of the records was originally expected on December 20th. Another record in the order was expected then and become available on the 20th. Then it was pushed back to the 27th, and now the 30th. Like what?
