  1. I'm a newb and I don't really understand the chastising of other newbs. This is a forum for vinyl people, why can't he ask for help without getting smartass responses (this is a rhetorical question as I understand the laws of the internet)

  3. I despise this kind of atmosphere here. Why should people look something up on google when they prefer direct communication with more experienced enthusiasts? I was happy to answer the question. I'm happy to continue the discussion. I like these types of discussions. Just because a discussion doesn't appeal to you, that doesn't mean you have to be a dick to person who asked the question. I don't like/read 90% of the threads here about bands I don't care for. I don't go into them and chastise Blink-182 fans for their lame taste of music. It's childish. The real problem with the Internet and here is 20ish male immaturity. Grow up, people. edit: this wasn't directed at you, Soundboard. Just a general grievance.

  4. No offense man. I've read your responses and I haven't seen you answer his question or help him at all. You're just complaining about treatment. If it bothers you so much answer his question nicely. Be the change you seek.

  6. Didn't see this reply at the time, but yes and no. Yes, on RSD, I tend to leave after not finding the records I specifically go in looking for. However, I go to those same record stores damn near every week, and spend more than my fair share of money at them regularly. If it wasn't for the RSD exclusives, there's not a fucking chance I'd go out on RSD just to dig through the same bins I dig through every week, but with the added bonus of fighting the crowds. It's akin to heading to Walmart at 12:01am on Black Friday to do your weekly grocery shopping.

  11. yeah! he's right. i have nothing better to do. yeah! this too! basically guys. if you have a vinyl related question. assume it has been discussed on these boards. use the search function. read an old thread, educate yourself. still have a question? bump that old thread. "vinyl enthusiasts" are popping up everyday, it's the new cool thing to do i guess. so new members are popping up often posting the same questions & threads. so, yeah, peeps are gonna get dicky. myself included. common questions that could be answered with a simple google search, should be answered via that google search. it's not an elitist thing, i consider it a common sense thing. last year i wanted to stretch my ears. didn't know 2 dicks about the stretching process, healing times, what to expect, how to know if i've damaged my ears, what to do if i did.... so i found a message board specializing in body mod, lurked it for 2 weeks, any questions i had, they had answers to already in existing threads. didn't even need to join those boards or post at all. in my mind, this is how ALL message boards should be approached. lurk, lurk, lurk, join in on the action when you're ready. gives you a chance to see if that's a website you'll actually check often or if it was a fleeting interest.

  12. I agree 100%. Much of this board is great and I enjoy learning and discussing about new releases. The asinine elitism gets old REAL quick though. Honestly everyone I know in real life who is a serious vinyl fiend talks a lot of crap about VC users. Not the board itself, but it's "USERS." This doesn't mean every single one of you, it means the handful of pretentious assholes who act like they own the place. I've been bitched at for discussing flippers or complaining about large companies that mishandle their "sales." I've been told, "these issues have been discussed, just move on." Well EXCUSE US if someone comes to a VINYL message board looking to discuss topics pertaining to VINYL! OMG!?!?! How dare they! As for new vs old: They're both good! Why decide between one or the other! It all comes down to personal preference really.

  16. Normally, I don't really care about people listening to other stuff and not liking bands I like...thank God, it's a very subjective thing! BUT: if someone listens to Green Day, Billy Talent, Blink 182, Offspring, Sum 41, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, etc. and talks shit about Pink Floyd and The Beatles, I can't take them serious...seriously!

  18. If you're a fan, play the records! Don't get me wrong, you should do as you see fit with your money, but that record sounds great and should be listened to! With that being said, good luck on your hunt.

  22. AND if the OP already owns new and used records, shouldn't they already know the answer to the question? an experiment: 1. play new record 2. play used record 3. notice any differences? probably not. DUR.

  24. Yes, and this is why this is an important thread. Who here has been burned by buying a new reissue when they first started buying records, and then some time later get the original and notice that the reissue sounds like utter crap? I have some examples from my own collection: 1. all 2012 Rhino colored reissues of Misfits Walk Among Us. They have the same matrix etchings the 2009 reissues, which sound much better. However, the 2009 are crappy compared to the 1988 reissues, which are available at a decent price (less than the 2012s) and better made than the 1982 copies. 2. Rhino's Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction. Boring flat, compressed. 3. Rhino's 2005(?) Ramones reissues of their first 5 LPs on 180g and red vinyl. 4. 2009 Green Day reissues, especially Insomniac. Compressed sound. Unfortunately, the recent Hot Topic reissue on blue vinyl used the same stamper and sounds like utter crap. Get the original for a good sounding album. Get the reissue if you just want to look at something pretty and colored.

  25. Well said. Sometimes people ask questions, not just for a simple yes/no response but to hear other people's opinions and reasoning. If people can't start discussions on message boards then what the heck is a message board even for?
    1 point
  26. I am quite surprised at many of the hostile responses, seeing as there is a difference to new vinyl and old vinyl. Newer vinyl (newer pressings) most of the time has a bit worse sound than older ones. If you are not an audiophile then it really does not matter, if you like vinyl, you buy vinyl. My boyfriend is not an audiophile and does not hear the difference between a CD and a LP being played, but he buys vinyl because he thinks they look cooler plus they always come in a bigger package. So when it comes to old vs new, just listen and find your preference.

  27. Doesn't really matter, just buy the records you want/like. I usually try to avoid beat up spines, but usually i'm more concerned with the condition of the record itself. I say buy what you will enjoy and can afford.

  28. But what's it matter? Leave the thread alone then if it's annoying question or whatever

  33. Internet 101 » opin·ion noun \ə-ˈpin-yən\ 1 a : a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter b : approval, esteem 2 a : belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge b : a generally held view 3 a : a formal expression of judgment or advice by an expert Don't read so much into number three. I personally do not have anything against showcasing records. It's your shit, do as you please. If I were going to showcase records with my set-up, I would make it so records are easily accessible for playing time. Conclusively, welcome to Vinyl Collective. Enjoy your stay.

  37. In my opinion, post-rock > 90% of the albums VC piddles themselves over. You're inclined to disagree, by all means. But let the record show that your vinyl collection is comprised of All-American Rejects, Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Limp Bizkit, and Yellowcard. To name a few. I remember when I was young and musically naïve.

    Used Bin Finds

OK, I swear I'm NOT trying to outdo everybody here but this is what happened to me in 1990. I was at work (in Augusta GA) and a guy told me there were a bunch of punk rock records at a used book store. He told me the only bands he could name were GBH and Flipper. Well, I figured it would be a bunch of garage sale type records with a few punk rock records mixed in and so I didn't give it much more thought. It just so happens that I was down in that area of town and I looked over and I saw the book store he said these records were at. So I went over and in and what happened next sounds like I'm making this all up but I swear to God I'm not. I walked up to the old record racks and on the front row was the Flipper record and the GBH record. I walked up and looked behind the Flipper record and what I found was the SS Decontrol "Kids will have their say" record in dead mint condition. The cover looked like it had been pressed yesterday and the record itself didn't even have a spindle mark on the label. This was only the tip of the iceberg. There was EVERY X-Claim record there. There was also most of not all Dischord (ALL early pressings on the HEAVY stock), Dangerhouse, Touch and Go and to many to even name. There were around a 100 LP's that I picked up that day and they were all $3.00 each. This had to be someone’s collection that had either died or went to prison because this was not someone who just bought records; this was someone who collected collectable records. Well, I went to the front to check out and I wasn't believing this was actually going to happen till I gave them my money and I actually walked out of the store with these records. I paid the guy and asked if there we any 7"s with this collection, he stated that there were three large boxes at his house and he'd bring them in tomorrow. To say the least, I came in the next day and what was there would make ANYBODY cry let alone to have the chance to but these things at $1.00 each. Here I found (I bullshit you not) all Dischord, most Touch and Go, most Dangerhouse, and so on and so on. I purchased about 200 7"s like this and still left tons of records behind (bad move). There wasn't eBay back then and i don't even think I was using the internet back then so I had no idea what these things were all worth so I put in an add in the back of MRR and did a telephone auction and sold about 1/3 of them and gave away the rest to people who would like the freebee with the record they purchased from me. I will tell you it kills me when I now go to eBay or whatever and see how much some of the records were worth of the ones I left behind..... And this is how I started Selfless/Clearview Records...
