Brand New - Deja Entendu

Recommended Posts

As a fellow retail employee, nothing rubs me quite as bad as saying "I work retail and the service was terrible" - you didn't get a "service," you just called a store with an annoying question. That makes you a shitty customer and nothing more.

The whole purpose of RSD *used to be* thst you would go and camp out and you would be surprised with what the store had and hopefully pick up several other titles to help support. I would be livid too if I had 5 million whiny Brand New fans CALLING ME every day for months.

The worst part of a customer is thinking that they are the only one who has a thought or a need and that every retail slave should bow to it.

Just show up, get in line, cross your fingers, and buy a stack of records. If you don't get Deja, just buy the other retail version. It's not a challenging concept.

Completely agree with this. I work in retail too and as I and many others do our best to help and accommodate people it really is up to the consumer to get up and just do their part. Especially for rsd there is no way of knowing if you're going to get what you've ordered in until the day or two before. Regardless of how many people call however many shops there will always be a line of people ready and prepared for whatever release they're looking for.

This isn't true for everything they get.  I'm sure they do get stuff right up until Friday, but they aren't getting all this stuff in at once.  My local store started posting pictures of shit they got when they first starting getting it weeks ago.

Honestly, from a shop owners perspective it makes sense to be extremely vague with what you received.  If someone is really only looking for ONE thing and you tell them "nope definitely aren't getting it, sorry" then that person is for sure not coming to your store.  If you tell them "oh, I'm not sure, we open at 8 am on Saturday so come down and check it out" then they at least might come and potentially buy other items even if you don't have what they want.

jesus christ an argument over the appropriate way to treat a customer while working a 6 hour retail shift? has this become part of THE HOBBY now, too?

Remember when vinyl was a musical playback format, and not whatever this nonsense is? remember music? that shit was awesome.

As a retail worker I know that any retail worker I have to deal with hates me so I don't get too butthurt when they aren't nice to me.

If working retail taught me one thing it's this: Everyone's a customer. Customers suck. Everyone sucks. It's that simple.

Have you ever worked retail? Because I've been at it for 10 years, and the service I received was sub-par. If someone can't handle the hype around 1 day a year without becoming short tempered, they have no business dealing with customers.

But go ahead and keep acting like I'm in the wrong for trying to ask a simple question.

This is essentially their Black Friday with a quarter of the nonsense that comes with it LOL

yup worked retail for 8 years with 3 being at a record store. There's nothing wrong with your questions its your attitude after not getting what you want. Haven't most people worked retail at some point in their life? I don't think its an exclusive club.

It should be a human requirement to work retail.

I'm guessing that people are now assuming that I'm the kind of person who goes on Yelp sprees and gives everyone a bad review over the slightest thing.

But in reality, I asked this guy if he was getting a couple releases. He was annoyed. Asked which ones. Told me to check his website.

Now, if he's been asked this question a hundred times as everyone is so certain he has, shouldn't he know the answer? Wouldn't it be easier to just tell me yes or no rather than sending me elsewhere?

And like Willy said up there, it's their Black Friday, and still pales in comparison to what those employees deal with.

Also, LOLOLOLOL at "but it's a 4-6 hour shift". Must be hard.

I mean, I'm not denying that this will be pretty easy to come across initially when it comes out. I just wouldn't overestimate how widely available it will actually be. I wouldn't be surprised if once this first repress is gone, it takes a little while to see it on shelves again. Just look at what happens every time Triple Crown represses Devil & God. It's easy to get for a month or two, then goes out of print for a while.

And your favorite weapon. The last press dropped in late November and was gone in three weeks.

Here's the thing.  People who work retail are, like, working 4-6 hour shifts.  That's, like, a LONG time to be interacting and dealing with customers.  Maybe if you were someone who came in during the first hour, it'd make sense that they wouldn't already be infuriated by your presence in their store.  But by hour 2 or, like, 3, they've been talking to customers for 2-3 hours.  When you come in and ask a question, they are tired of customers.  Also, you are a whiner.  I know this because it makes more sense that all randomly selected customers who enter a shop would be whiners rather than one employee complaining about all those customers would be poor at knowing their responsibilities as a retail worker.  Also, I'm angry and you are a thing on the internet I can attempt to knock down and undress to make myself feel nominally better.

I work retail and they are almost always 10 hour shifts. Try to grasp the concept of how painful that is.
