Bingo. Texted a few friends something very similar in an attempt to avoid raining on any parades in this thread. Didn’t want to be that guy, but now it sounds there’s grounds for a discussion. I listened to 2 of the 3 singles. They’re okay. They’re not bad by any means but they’re also not up to the quality you’d expect to hear on a National record. Try as you might, telling yourself “hey, this isn’t a National album, it doesn’t have to sound entirely like The National” is fine on paper. I’d agree with you. But when Matt’s unmistakable voice swoops in, the line becomes a little blurry. At some point it feels like I’m listening to National b-sides that weren’t quite fleshed out enough to be b-sides. Not meant to shit on Matt and everyone involved in making the record, just an honest opinion. The fact is, if you’re looking at that deluxe, you’re paying $30 extra for a 2nd LP of tracks that’s weren’t solid enough to make the cut of a record that’s not solid enough to make the cut of a National album. Maybe that’s a hot take. $35-40 would’ve swayed me to roll the dice, but I’ll probably lock in a copy of that indie blue with Bull Moose and decide if it’s worth keeping before it ships out. I really enjoy his EL VY album, but I feel like those tracks impressed me a lot more – even on first listen – than these are. But of course it’s Matt Berninger. His voice is iconic and I can’t see him slapping his name and face on an album that’s trash or has no merit. I think it’ll be a nice morsel to tide us over until a new National album... but if their next LP is the full meal, I’m not going balls deep on deluxe breadsticks. Even if they’re signed.

Current DHL COVID restrictions mean Denovali can only ship 6-8 record orders from Germany to the US, nothing smaller. They're already sitting on a two record order from me, and I was about to order two more records. But if I can find some other folks who are interested in ordering from them, we can combine those orders, split up the cost of shipping and get them shipped out now. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, PM me. I've got like 7 mailers here, and the more people who order, the more we can spread out the shipping costs (Germany to me, plus $4 for me to ship it to you). Back in the day, high shipping prices meant this was the only way to order from Denovali, but it seems like it's a good time to re-start the concept.

Can I still try to adjust it in case it decides to... cooperate? All I know is that new, decent quality styli are more expensive than I want to be, at least I think the one on this turntable is. Should I look up what the cartridge is in the manual (or appropriate resource) and just buy a replacement, or go full circle and get a totally different cartridge? Now that makes me think, "Are there cartridges made specifically for this bass-heavy type of music?"... I'll have to look that up, too. Wow, I really suck at looking things up!

The tonearm??? Oof. Anyways, I think before I just go at it with a pair of pliers I'll look it up a bit, now that I know what the problem is... thank you for the input! I will be more careful, especially if I have to replace the cartridge. EDIT: A quick bit of research says "Your stylus is really bent" and "Use a toothpick, not pliers".

Well, it's not bait, and there's actually a problem! "There's no need to get snooty." You see the stylus? It's over ~15 degrees from where it should be. A horrible illustration of the stylus, but it gets the job done: red is where it is, green is where it should be. Now, changing the topic to something that I hope people can actually answer and not go "Troll!! Troll!!" even though it's a real question: how do I fix this crooked stylus without permanent damage? I tried pushing it gently over, but it didn't move and I didn't push harder in fear that the stylus might break.
