  1. The best part about this thread is that the only person who's able to cut through all the bullshit and post a relevant response is the OP.

  3. Michael Jackson was a weirdo who befriended kids while he was the most famous person in the world. Could he have been a child molester? Yes. Will we ever know for sure. No. Was the girl in Tiger's Jaw assaulted on stage? Yes, people saw it. I would never say he definitely wasn't a child molester. But it's a much more complicated case. Dude lived probably the most fucked up life imaginable. As a child he was forced by an abusive parent into being in the public eye as a performer. He never had a chance to develop as a normal person. Dude died because he was addicted to fucking surgical anesthesia. That indicates an unchartable level of "not ok." Again, none of this is an excuse or a defense. Just trying to illustrate that it's not even on the same level, any way you choose to look at it, as the TJ incident. If he molested a child I hope there's a hell I don't believe in for him to burn in. But he's dead and nothing can stop Billie Jean from being a catchy as fuck song.

  4. who needs MORE 'beautiful metaphor driven'? yughk. when i listen to music i wanna hear some unique narrative, detail, reality, opinion, originality, etc. i appreciate music that grows along side me and challenges me as a listener. what if Kozelek was comin' over to your house? you start cookin' him dinner, you bust your ass to make dude some blue crab cakes just cause you wanna make sure he likes the food. then he shows up sulking, and starts gnawing your ear off about girls. you gonna sit there and cry with him at the dinner table? HELL NO! dude, he's an old fuckin' man! i don't wanna hear that shit anymore! i'd kick that fool outta my house! i value his complaints, gripes and even his gossip infinitely more. it makes him truthful, textural and gives him dynamics -- coincidentally i feel the same about his last two records musically. that's something, as a post-19-year-old, i can get behind. also, all this 'ah, he half-assed it,' and 'he probably wrote it in a week'. are you fucking insane? YOU write something this good in a week, ya flippin' joker! someone made a good point about Benji being the point of polarization. i think that's right on the money; these last two records challenge the listener wayyy more than any of his past work. he takes way more risks(successfully in my view), his influences are way less obvious and therefore it's way less contrived to my ears. Benji and now Universal are easily my favorites to date. both are completely unique listening experiences. doesn't mean i don't like the old stuff. i just don't think they compare. it's hard think of another artist that's progressed this much at this age; not usually how it works. we're currently living through the dividing line and that is very exciting to me. i love that people don't understand how fuckin' incredible his new records are and i genuinely look forward to someone trashing what i just wrote.

  6. It just hit me that not only is this thread amazing for being worthwhile, when's the last time a thread like this was started as a first post and the OP came back and continued to participate in it?

  11. It's funny because you know everyone who doesn't like the new album is going to be showing off their vinyl copies when they come out.

  12. Worth the wait. It sounds fantastic.

  13. Listening to these lyrics one would think he could put a new album out each month.

  14. You do know he's dead, right? There is literally no way for him to benefit from people enjoying his music. If you can't separate art from the artist you probably should just stop enjoying most media.

  15. Seems to me the honest reality of it all is that those of us who have been fans since the 90's are not going to get it or understand why he would take such a radical style shift. And by now I should have come to terms with the fact that he's not going back either. A while back I was remembering when he first shifted to finger picking with Tiny Cities and that was the first big blow up us fans had about his change in style. If only I had known then he would end up falling so far in terms of form and function, I would have moved on..

  16. I can't even make it halfway through that track. All these overdubbed vocals running unevenly is just a mess

  17. He lost me when his songs began to sound like finger exercises on spanish guitar. Up until then it was all fine and dandy. Pulled me back in with Perils which is up there with his best work. Benji bordered on banal and embarrassing but all the fanfare on that record made me feel like I was in the minority. Fair to say the outlook for this one isn't good.

    Is this anything special?

You should know that you are probably the first ever poster to so soundly disarm the VC ruff-n-tuff crew of their shit-talkin' with one single post. You could get some serious cash for that. Or, your friend could. Or you could, if you tell him it's not worth shit and then sell it for yourself.

  21. I got one ordered this morning around 9am from music direct for $22 and it shipped about 20 min after my order confirmation email. And "shipped" shipped, not just a label. It's already made a few stops on its way to me Arriving Monday morning so if my Amazon comes through I'll have an extra.

  22. yes, and you have to change the shipping method, it defaults to pick up in person (no shipping)

  23. Does every person on this board have ADD? Jesus fucking Christ you guys. OP, I can't help you as I have no idea what it's truly worth. If it was mine, I'd hope to get between $500-$1000 for it but obviously that's a big range. I agree with everyone else who said to put it up on eBay and see what it sells for. It's a shitty thing to do, but you could always let an auction run its case and then cancel the transaction if you just want to know what someone would be willing to pay for it without actually selling it. An MJ fan board may be a good place to ask too. Good luck! Keep us updated.

  24. I forget who mentioned the Tiger's Jaw incident (so sorry other guy whose username I can't be arsed to look back at), but my point with John Lennon is if you're going to boycott a (dead) artist's work because of horrible shit they did you need to cast a wider net. The fact that you would say one is worse than the other is pretty shitty. Abuse is abuse, physical or sexual, child or adult. To say there is a heiarchy is problematic (ugh sorry). Both acts are horrendous. Would you tell a woman whose husband beats her "Well at least he's not molesting your kid!" If you're going to say "Dont enjoy the work of this artist because they allegedly did this horrible thing" you then need to boycott all artists who have allegedly done horrible things, unless you want to be a hypocrite. Enjoying art and supporting the artist are two completely different things. If Michael Jackson were still alive I would never buy something that would directly support him. Jared Leto is an alleged rapist/abuser so I do not and will not pay to see a movie he is in. I might still watch and enjoy a movie he is in, doubtful because he sucks, but I would not support it. Art is not the artist, but you can and should be mindful of who/what you support.

  25. But my biggest point was that you're a dumb piece of shit for thinking the Tiger's Jaw thing has any relevance to this.

  26. You guys did a fantastic job with this release. I like how DIY the interview book is, and how professional the jacket and record are. I can't wait to see what's next from you guys.

  30. Every time it's unavailable I'm filled with relief. Don't get me wrong, I definitely want the single, but I don't need to drop $30 on it right now. One of these days I'll snag it. Glad you finally picked it up!

  35. I ended up selling other records to cover the cost of this. Shipping was higher than expected, yeah, but I'd much rather own this than some of the other records I have (or used to, rather).

  39. Well, the "Uneven Wear" Theory postulates that if one who generally listens to albums start to finish in rotation listens to one song a significant amount of times before the release of an album, there will be a gap in the novelty of listening to the full album in the place where the aforementioned pre-listened-to song is in the sequence of the track listing. That gap will become noticeable to people who listen in terms of full album rotations and cause some measure of dysphoria where they would otherwise (i.e. having not pre-listened to individual tracks a significant amount of times) felt the uniform freshness from hearing those songs altogether had they waited to hear the album as a whole first. Other than that some people enjoy the sense of novelty in a experiencing an album from a physical medium for the very first time. It includes a certain sense of ritual that is very fulfilling to many of us and to listen to more than just a single digitally any number of times before that event is somewhat lackluster just because some of us have such an attachment to the physical medium and being completely surprised by the content in that first listen.
