  6. The Nils’ story has been described as a “Greek rock ‘n’ roll tragedy.” Forging a following in the mid ’80s with their melancholy punk-driven power-pop sound, the Montreal group became casualties of a record label deal gone bad, before spiralling into black holes of drug addiction and death. Despite languishing in legal limbo and quickly going out of print, The Nils’ 1987 debut album has become a Canadian cult classic, influencing members of Green Day, Hüsker Dü, Sloan, and Superchunk. Now, to celebrate the album’s 30th anniversary, Label Obscura is proud to reissue a deluxe remastered LP, available on 180 gram vinyl for the first time in decades. This edition of The Nils’ classic debut features new artwork from Yorodeo (the visual art collective of Dog Day’s Seth Smith), a gatefold jacket with archival photos, and liner notes by Jack Rabid, editor of New York’s influential music zine The Big Takeover. A series of live performances from the reformed Nils will follow throughout October. Pre-order here : https://labelobscura.bandcamp.com/album/the-nils-the-nils Listen here :

  7. I'm sure it'll drum up some interest on eBay and serve as a symbol of flipper greed. I can't blame them for riding the wave until the inevitable crash, but I think I'll stick to more modestly priced releases.

  10. Oh SHIT! Good call. Fuck that @rogeoa8 dude for calling anybody out for shady activity. He's probably just butthurt that the 12 copies he bought from the first pressing have zero value now. Get a real job you waste product.

  12. It was confirmed with the band (Reddit) that the $45 release was the standard vinyl with the rushed CD in the mail beforehand. I made that up to create some mini heart attacks.

Some real good stuff there. Splinter is a such an underrated film. One of my favorites. Another one to check out is "Altered." Alien movie directed by the Blair Witch/Exists/Lovely Molly guys.

  17. Have you seen The Host? The Korean one, not that one based on the novel by the Twilight author. That one is fun. Also, I'll assume you've seen John Carpenter's The Thing, but it's literally impossible to watch that too many times.

  22. Agree. The only other similar box I have in my collection is this one (which happens to be the only context in which a pizza box is acceptable): https://www.discogs.com/Fat-Boys-Fat-Boys/release/4054743

  23. It doesn't even have a ribbon going down the middle to make grabbing the Lps themselves that much easier, either, given that they're sunk halfway into the box . You essentially have to tip the LPs out of the box and catch them with your other hand as they tumble out. I don't like junking box-set boxes but I've never found one as flimsy as this before. I mean, it's the only box-set box I have that isn't lacquered or otherwise treated with a water-resistant coating of some kind. Assuming they they stick to the pizza box format (the GLS box-set mock-up sure looks like they are), I think I'll only buy box-sets from this reissue sub-imprint when/if they go on sale. Maybe they'll invest in custom-sized, lacquered boxes if the feedback from fans is negative enough. I get the gimmick (it goes back to the aesthetics of The Paper Bag Princess where the label borrowed its name) but it comes at the expense of us who paid a lot and imagined at least half the cost going towards a sturdier box.

  24. No reason to be using boxes like that. Such a cheap-out move. Very disappointing.

  25. Absolutely - I think this is the third tease they've dropped now for it. Hopefully an early-October release.

    Riot Fest 2017

Jawbreaker was phenomenal. At The Drive-In was on fire on Saturday, too — way better than when I saw them earlier this year. My new discovery was the Regrettes — great 60s pop-meets-indie-punk stuff with good female harmonies. Built To Spill is nothing to look at, but my god, can Doug shred. So happy to have seen them play Keep It Like A Secret.

  27. I would pay so much for the More of Our Stupid Noise compilation on vinyl...it was one of those CDs I bought when I was 13 because it had treble charger and Hayden on it, and grew to love so many of the songs on the comp, many of which I wouldn't revisit again until at least a decade later.

  28. Interesting, but not overly cheap. The Dears box set, which was also limited, still appears to be in stock. I feel like at that price, the pressing amount seems appropriate - for big fans/completists only. Still, it looks like Paper Bag are working hard on reissues, and that's really cool. I feel like there's a lot of great Canadian music from the last 20 or so years that doesn't get reprinted/repressed, and it's nice to see them countering that. I'd be interested in picking up the first LP on its own, probably not the box set.

  29. I was at that show too. The new songs sound awesome live. I really enjoyed the addition of the saxophone to the old songs as well. I am curious what Ted Leo's draw in other cities is like as there was not a great turnout in Detroit

  35. Your best bet is to spend some money and get a video surveillance system. Set up multiple camera angles, like 6 or more cameras to catch everything they do. I think they even make wireless cameras so you can set one up along the street.

  38. If anyone is feeling risky, Best Buy appears to have the vinyl edition of The Vietnam War OST for $13.99 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/the-vietnam-war-a-film-by-ken-burns-lynn-novick-original-score-lp-vinyl/6088008.p?skuId=6088008 It has the same UPC (602557769982) as what I've seen elsewhere, so maybe...?
