  1. On my way to see Rainer Maria

  2. Ok. This is going to take up a lot of space, but holy shit. For starters early last week Lauren messaged me saying that my package might be late. No big deal. She said I should open it immediately because there might be some perishable stuff at the top. Then Mike messages me to say its sitting at the post office. I have all my mail sent to my parents and they put their mail on hold while they were out of town for Christmas, so it got delivered to them on Tuesday or Wednesday. I had them open it to see if there was anything they needed to eat. Most everything else was wrapped, but they were like holy shit. This is so much! I had to explain the whole thing to them. The peeked around but were very confident the person knew me. Tonight was family Hannukkah dinner so I got the package and this is about how it went. Also based on just talking to my parents I was pretty sure that the person was Lauren. Opening up the package today the first things were homemade cookies and fudge and a lollipop 7-11 slurpee with sugar thing because I'm obsessed with slurpees. We don't have 7-11s in Georgia so whenever I'm out of town I get slurpees and make it a point to check in - so probably someone that I'm friends with on facebook - Lauren or Mike haha. There were also some stickers/postcards. One of the stickers was from a NYC street artist and the postcard was a Fest postcard from a tattoo shop in Gainesville. I hung out with both Mike and Lauren at Fest, but Lauren is from NYC. Also a MLIW sticker that I'm kind of stoked on. Had never really listened to this band, but ended up hanging out with Jeff at/after Wrecking Ball last year because they used to stay with good friends of mine when they were in town and he was one of the coolest dudes I've ever met. Next I opened the non-record packages. 2 mix cds - one being a hockey mix. All songs about hockey although one of my favorites was left off! (The orange and the black by the Boils. Maybe this was left off on purpose since there were a bunch of Rangers songs. A couple of zines, a slushcult tshirt (a brand for those who love frozen drinks), a book about touring with the Bouncing Souls (favorite band), and 2 cat toys - a taco and a krylon spray can. I'm freaking out of these toys. I dont even want to give the cats the spray can one because its too cool and its been 15 minutes and they've already destroyed the taco. By now you probably know the Hannukkah Harry was Lauren and we facebook videoed so she could watch my kittens destroy these things. Also the spray can because I help out a bunch of artists paint murals and happened to work on one at Fest when a friend from Baltimore was painting a few blocks from my hotel on Friday afternoon. Lastly the records. 2 Up For Nothing records - NYC band that I think just played their last show opening for the Souls a few weeks ago (more hints towards Lauren). A Have Nots record - her recommendation, the Vandals, Oi to the World, a random flexi, and the Silent World comp (Misfits Tribute) with a Souls song on it. One of the few souls comps that I didn't already own. I think she said she bought this from Japan. Lastly there was a 7" package labeled open this last. This was the dead giveaway (if it wasn't given away already). The Scandals/Plow United split and a Scandals flexi. I had bought tickets to go the Souls shows in NYC and ended up not being able to go so I gave her the ticket and she grabbed these for me at the show. Finally my dad was like I knew it was her too and peeled off the mailing label on the package because she had reused the box. A small caveat. Lauren and I met last December through Victimofadriveby at a Queers/BigWig show in NY. We also hung out at Fest and went record shopping when I was in NY for Thanksgiving so she probably knows me a bit better than most of the people on this board. Nonetheless she fucking killed it and I'm super stoked as was everyone watching me open these packages. Thanks again! Pictures are being a bitch to upload so I'll get to that tomorrow. Enjoy the book I just wrote for those of you that like to read without pictures.

  9. This year I got an awesome package, courtesy of @scottheisel. I got records from Toe, The Felix Culpa, The Black Heart Procession, Sainthood Reps, and Helen Earth Band; all continuing the tradition of me getting records from bands I recognize the name of but never listened to. He wrote an awesome breakdown of each record, which I didn't include in the above picture, but it got me really excited to listen to each of them. I've only listened to Toe so far, but I really enjoyed it. I just so happen to also not already have the Color Spectrum DVD, so that was an awesome catch and it will be great to finally be able to watch. The Steel Train promo photo is hilarious, and it just made me realize that if I had seen the band members before I listened to their music, there's no way I would have ever given it a chance because Jack looks absolutely ridiculous. The aughts were a rough time I guess. Thanks, Scott. Getting a package from you feels like getting a package from a celebrity and I am very grateful. Happy new year!

  12. Two connections was under $600 round trip. One connection was like $1100. Direct was a ridiculous $1600+. Haha. I'm definitely ok with paying less and having my flight be a little longer. Most of it is in layovers honestly. Oh you know it. I got my Spotify playlists downloaded. I'm good to go. I don't mind the long travel time cause I added a day to my trip so it's not like I'm losing anything. Plus I get a whole three weeks in London. Can't wait ot hit up Rough Trade and Banquet!

  20. hi hello happy new year. i'm not usually one for telling secrets, but let's just say, hypothetically, that since i'm about to go to work and won't be home at midnight (or for a very long while after midnight), that there's a very good chance you can go hear/buy/download the entire comp right this very second. i'm not promising anything. but there's a very, very good chance. https://artisticintegrityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/air-036-an-impression-of-an-original-a-tribute-to-against-me

  23. SoundStage Direct always carries all MoV releases. They'll note the color and mention limited to X amount. Once they've sold out, they'll remove the note and safe bet they're all on the subsequent black. I'm pissed I missed out on the Nailbomb color one when they had it.

  24. MoV usually has one color variant and black for the rest. Some options for buying the colored variant should pop up in the US though, can't remember any sites that I've gotten them from in the past though.

    Virgil updates

Before VC, he ran a somewhat successful record label, Suburban Home, that put out some great stuff. On the initial vinyl boom he moved to the forefront of pressing vinyl for labels that didn't have the money or see the need. He created a co-op, Vinyl Collective, to release record voted upon by members - there were a handful of releases, The Falcon, This Charming Man, Jealous Sound, but when it came to press the next LP...crickets. He seemingly took the money made from these releases, all of which were pretty successful, if not very successful, and likely recouped cost +. Some folks got refunds, most got nothing and he made money on the investment of board members.

  31. My favorite records/songs of 2016. For some fancy pants pics of my top ten, this way -> instagram.com/eliminator.jr LPs: 10. Oathbreaker. rheia 09. Mamiffer. the world unseen 08. Russian Circles. guidance 07. Wreck and Reference. indifferent rivers romance end 06. David Bowie. blackstar 05. Xiu Xiu. plays the music of twin peaks While staying true to the original on the vocal-driven tracks, Xiu Xiu truly make the music of Twin Peaks their own on the jazz and ambient oriented themes of the score. It's not just a modern take on these songs, but there are plenty twisted and sometimes terrifying interpretations, intensifying the feeling of dread and drowsiness the originals so eloquently convey. A deferent homage to the greatest soundtrack of all time and a wholly enjoyable, ambitious and impressive album on its own. 04. Bon Iver. 22, a million It took me some effort to find the songs behind all the mess on this records, but as soon as I had found them they outshone all the filth and autotuned mindfuckery Justin Vernon piled up on them to hide their beauty from everyone who isn't willing to dig deep enough. I get people who liked his first records and hate this one, but to me it's just as good and represents Justin at the peak of his art. 03. The Hotelier. goodness This album really took me by surprise. I thought Home Like NoPlace Is There was a good enough record, but not the modern 17th wave emo-classic young, good looking people everywhere made it out to be. Goodness, though, is. Soft Animal, Piano Player and Two Deliverances are, among other highlights of this record, of which there are plenty, some of the best straight up rock songs of this year and all of them hit almost too close to home on an emotional level. A heartfelt record about growing older, seeking happiness in everyday life and being at ease with the fact that things are tough and always will be. 02. 40 Watt Sun. wider than the sky Patrick Walker's voice carries the weight of the world. His first classic, Warning's Watching From A Distance, is one of the most emotionally crushing doom albums of all time and he continues to paint his elaborate, miles deep and all-black pictures with 40 Watt Sun. For the first time, though, he got rid of the doom, replaced the fuzz with clean electric and some acoustic guitars and plays his 10+ minutes epics as if nothing changed at all. This is slowcore, but slowed down. It's doom light, but heavier than ever. Thrown into the abyss of eternal sorrow and regret. 01. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. skeleton tree Nick Cave spent his entire career writing songs about love and death, the sorrow, despair. The fear of god and redemption, if it may ever come. His protagonists were murderers, lovers, people both deceitful and deceased. On Skeleton Tree, there is no story to tell. No protagonist. No dramatic purpose. Actually, no purpose at all. What is the purpose when the one you love is gone? Nick Cave doesn't tell, because he doesn't know. This record is the possibly greatest storyteller of our time, lost for words, with nothing left to say. And I wept. Songs: Grouper. headache The Hotelier. soft animal 40 Watt Sun. stages Bon Iver. 8 circle Radiohead. true love waits Nothing. acd Deftones. rubicon Nine Inch Nails. burning bright (field on fire) Swans. cloud of unknowing Boris. sometimes

  32. There was a little buzz around their latest album and some murmurings in the Post Rock/Metal thread in everything else so I figured this could use a thread. We're very pleased to announce that we will be working with Bossk on the reissue of the long out of print 1 & 2. Remastered by Magnus Lindburg for extra sonic abuse, this is not to be missed. Here's a statement from the band: “Releasing Audio Noir has been our ultimate focus since we reformed 4 years ago. We're all extremely proud of the record and the response has been overwhelming at the shows this past year. Our previous recordings however, some over 10 years old now, are ultimately the reason this band still exists today. Creating & recording both .1 & .2 was very new and exciting for us. Essentially trying stuff with music we'd not in previous bands without any experience of playing shows outside the local area, or releasing anything. They're important to us and represent some of the most fun we've had as a band. There has been high demand for the first record to be repressed for sometime and it feels right now that they be made available again. The original press of this was our first vinyl release, released by Garden Of Exile Records and was a huge milestone for us at the time. A huge thanks to Magnus for breathing new life into these songs We have always been friends with the people at Holy Roar and what they have done for the underground UK music scene over the years is something that we have always supported, so for them to be releasing this feels right. - Alex, Sam, Tom, Nick & Rob (Bossk)” Shipping on or around 24th February 2017. any anime nerds?

Got into Attack on Titan last week and I'm already a diehard fan now lol. I mean, I saw all the episodes and OVAs (Junior High too), read the chapters and got some merchandise, all in less than a week (the opening themes also make for perfect gym music). A TV show hasn't had that kind of impact on me since Game of Thrones, it really is something else. Season 2 is gonna be fucking insane.

  36. Dude ran a label through VC and I believe it functioned as a co-op of sorts for some releases? A ton of people paid money up front to get something press and he just bailed. All this happened way before I found this place, but that's what I've gathered. Sucks he did that because he pressed some awesome shit through that label.

  50. I took advantage of all the Hastings going out of business and scored these racks for $100. If you've got the room I highly recommend pillaging a Hastings for some. The drawers each have two rows. The bottom ones weirdly aren't tall enough for LPs (they're like a half inch too short), but they fit three rows of 7"s pretty perfectly. Very stoked on this shit...
